Another Mike Gordon Bass Identification

Discussion in 'Basses [BG]' started by SnakeAnthony, May 6, 2006.

  1. OK, so its kind of been a hobby of late to check out all the different basses the Mike Gordon owns and uses with various bands, such as Phish, The Duo, Leo Kottke, etc. I've tracked down quite a few, but have just found some photos of him sitting in with Keller Williams using a bass that I cannot identify, and was hoping that one of you could. Heres a link to the pic:

I've got no idea as to what that is. I guess the easiest way to identify it would be the headstock, but I can't place it to anything else, nor can I read the writing. Anyone know anything?

    Alembic Epic 5
    Gibson Thunderbird

Theres the list of 16 basses that I know of for sure. And thats just so far. I've messaged Mike through his Myspace about it, asking him if I missed any. I doubt I'll get a response, but it was worth a shot. Any others that you have to add onto the list are welcome.

I know in the very early days of Phish Mike played a G&L L-2000. IIRC a sunburst finish w/either an ebony or rosewood FB. There's some Phish book I saw that had a picture of their first gig, I think he was playing that through a Peavey head w/2-15 cab.

Looks to be a Yamaha TRB. I've never seen him play one of those either.

  8. Looks like a Yammie TRB.

  9. Hey, dude. The Resonator Acoustic is made by a company called National, FYI

I once had impure thoughts. Oh, and I pluck my ear hair.
One of the Languadocs was stolen several years back, IIRC...

  11. Yeah, that would be the "Dragon." Which was said to have been stolen around '97. However, I've seen him using the Dragon (or an identical bass) backstage and live in video footage well into '00 and '01. Perhaps that was just a false explination for his move to the Modulus, perhaps he has an identical bass, I can't be sure.

  12. Ok, so the updated list to the basses that Mike owns/has owned:

    Modulus Genesis
    Modulus Quantum Coco Bolo
    Modulus Quantum Black Cherry
    Modulus Quantum TBX Coco Bolo
    Paul Languadoc custom "Dragon Bass"
    Paul Languadoc custom "Fish Bass"
    Lakland Hollowbody
    Alembic Epic 5
    Gibson Thunderbird
    Fender '70s Jazz
    Rick Turner Renn
Dave Smith A Series Headless/Body-less Bass
    Unidentifiable Upright/Double Bass
    Martin Alternative X Acoustic/Electric
    National Resonator Acoustic
    Yamaha TRB5
    G&L L-2000

Anything else that anybody knows about?

    The bass was definitely stolen.

The switch to the Modulus had nothing to do with it being stoen though. He switched on a whim during the summer tour '97 in Europe.
