If Paul McCartney hadn't written a song about it I probably would have just sailed through it like another mid milestone birthday. But after listening to the song for the better part of all of my adult life, I've finally arrived at that musically celebrated milestone of 64. Now I guess I need to start going for Sunday morning rides while my wife knits a sweater by the fireside.
So today, as I drink my first cup of coffee, I'm listening to the song and thinking,
why didn't Sir Paul write a follow up called, "Now I'm 64" ?
    anyway, here's my birthday checklist:

When I get older losing my hair - x
    Many years from now
Will you still be sending me a Valentine
Birthday greetings bottle of wine - x
If I'd been out till quarter to three - x
    Would you lock the door
Will you still need me, will you still feed me
    When I'm sixty-four
    You'll be older too - x
And if you say the word
    I could stay with you
I could be handy, mending a fuse - x (actually a circuit breaker)
    When your lights have gone
You can knit a sweater by the fireside
Sunday mornings go for a ride - x (on the Harley)
Doing the garden, digging the weeds - x
    Who could ask for more
Will you still need me, will you still feed me
    When I'm sixty-four
Every summer we can rent a cottage
In the Isle of Wight, if it's not too dear
We shall scrimp and save - x
    Grandchildren on your knee
Vera, Chuck and Dave - x (Harry, Beau and Lily)
Send me a postcard, drop me a line
    Stating point of view
Indicate precisely what you mean to say - X (wife is good at this)
    Yours sincerely, wasting away
Give me your answer, fill in a form
    Mine for evermore
Will you still need me, will you still feed me
    When I'm sixty-four - x

“Lily” doesn’t rhyme with “save.” You’d have been a terrible Beatle.

    ;)
