another slap problem

Discussion in 'Technique [BG]' started by stinkfist, Jun 10, 2004.

  1. ok guys so ive got the hitting E with your thumb, but what about the others, I heard u actually pluck them? :help:
  2. Well, yes and no. You do pluck them, but you also slap them like the low E, and you can pluck the E as well. It's pretty easy. Hook your fingertip under the string and pull away from the bass. Release it, and it will make a sharp "Pop!" sound. The method is easy, but it takes some practice to do it with coordination.

I like Victor Wootens technique. Its all just another way of hitting the string... He practices being able to play on all strings with either slapping with the thumb (in both directions: up and down strokes) and with all four fingers in every combination. Dont restrict yourself in any way!

Hes super human though... in typical situations I will hit the E and A strings with my thumb and mostly pop the D and G strings.

On a side note... Marcus Miller does an awful lot of playing with just his thumb. :bassist:
