  1. Hello i currently have a pretty crappy amp. I need a new one. heres what i need.
    -couple hundred watts
-either a half stack or full stack, combos got no soul in my book
-I dont want to get the best amp ever.. a thousand is about my limit
    -brand doesn't matter

  2. Sorry i play rock. anything from chili peppers to zeppelin to more jazzy stuff.

Hmm...what other instruments do you usually play with? You may need more than a couple hundred watts, and you could definitely get something nice and stay under $1000.

Are you open to suggestions on used amps as well as new?

G-K might be a good place to start, you could get the 700RB or the 1001RB and still have enough room in the budget for a good cab...maybe an Avatar 212...

  4. Peavey amp head and cab, Firebass/Max 700 + 4x10 or 1x15 i would say would be good, it was my first real rig, well, my first actual bass amp anyway

Combo's have no soul? i think the soul of the music is down to the player :p

  5. thank you.

    used amps are no problem.

Yeah, you are right its all the player. I just don't want a combo.

Yeah, for that money you could get something quite good.

    And yes, get 400+ watts.

Used Peavey or SWR head, a couple of cabs from Avatar, you're in business.

combos got no soul? Tell that to Calvin "Fuzz" Jones (RIP), bass player for Muddy Waters. I saw him in 1972 playing his P bass through a Standel combo with 2 12s.

  7. Ebay is great for used amps IMO, peavey stuff is really cheap on there, but dont let it put you off!

And as far as i am aware that GK is pretty tastey :)

Used Peavey, GK 400RB, Kustom Groove bass, and/or one the deals at avatar. You said a couple hundred watts, but too much is better than not enough. You dont have to use it but it's there if you need it (no PA support). A Peavey Firebass can give you a lot of power for a great price. So can That Kustom Groove bass. I think I'd shop for cabs first but keep in mind to get full power from the Peaveys you have to have a 2 ohm load. This can become a problem in the future if yuo want to keep your cabs but change your head. You'll have more options with 2, 8ohm cabs.

If you are looking GK, Riks music is MUCH cheaper than Musicians Fiend. I'd go with a GK 1001RBII ($600 new), and look for a used 4-10 cabinet. I'd avoid Avatar. Even though there are A LOT of Avatar fans on the site here, I'm not one of them. JMHO.

  10. I'm more concerned about the quality of the sound than the volume... i am not looking to be gigging anything near bigtime soon.

Thats understadnable, but in your price range you really don't have a sacrifice volume while getting a good quality sound.

  13. 1000 is maximum.. i don't really want to spend that much if i don't need to.

Is your Firebass operating at 2 ohms or 4 ohms? How does the 4x10+1x15 sound with this head? Is this set up loud?

If thats the case, definitely look at the G-K's...you can get the 700RB new for around $500 or the 1001RB new for $600, and you could get a new Avatar 212 for under $300, or a 410 for around $350. So you could get an all new setup for around $800.

  16. Whats an avatar? i know its a cab but who makes them and are they the best? i have seen people talking about them all the time on talkbass
