Hi all - I bought this off CL because I liked it. It plays well, has Bartolini pups and an Aguilar OBP-3 preamp. I have no idea who made it.

The guy I bought it from said he worked for a music store and it had been 'passed around' (i.e. no history). He said it looked like it was made by a luthier but I think it could have been a kit. There are no markings where the neck meets the body either. Anyway, does it ring a bell with anybody? Even just style-wise.

    Thanks!

  3. If I may ask, what did you pay for it? It looks boutique.

The matching spalted maple top/headstock definitely doesn't scream "cheap".

I traded a 4-string 2012 American Standard Jazz (hand-stained). New they're $1300, I don't know exactly how much it was worth at this point. Mint condition.

The best I can say is it looks like a piece that will get two responses. "It looks like crap, will you take [insulting amount of money]?" And "It looks unique, that's awesome. How much?"

Looks like something you'd see Mr. Torgue playing, it has a cel-shaded look like Borderlands.

^ That was not intended as an insult. I thought it was damaged at first, then saw it was a pattern. Definitely in the cool category, but I'm not sure how much I'd pay extra for it myself.

No offense taken - I didn't buy it as an investment. I got it because I want to play it, without the benefit of knowing if the trade was fair. Although I really liked my jazz, I have other 4-strings, and I'm getting good use out of this one. I would like to take the ramp out but don't think I could handle filling in the gap properly.

The old sale thread has a link to a Youtube video of this bass being played by a wiz-kid as he visited Lohui Guitar. Starting around 2:05.

Lohui is in Hong Kong, and even then I don't know if they were associated with making the bass or just came to own it at one point.

  11. Altough the basses look alike, I don't think it's the same. The controls don't seem to match up. Could be wrong, though.

That video is from Dan Hui, who sold the bass to Beast_Within, who listed it here. According to the old thread, after the video the bass had its bridge pickup moved closer to the bridge (hence the ramp in its place) and the pups were changed to Bart soapbars. Somewhere along the way it picked up the OBP-3 and since Beast's ad it has had a mid-freq toggle switch added.

Dan is on TB too (dooft11). He lists the bass in his previously-owned gear as "unknown woody". I've PM'd him but don't know how often he checks TB.
