Any creative ideas on boxes for shipping basses in?

I'm a bit stuck trying to find a box to ship a bass in, I've hit all the local shops, and none of them have any boxes. None of them have great turnover on basses, not even guitar center.

I can have a custom box built for (gulp) $45.

Looking for something that comes in about $35 less than that. Ideas?

  2. Ya know, I bought a cheap gig bag from Music123--$16.99, I think. I put the bass in the gig bag and used the shipping box. That's a little more than $10, but a little less than $45.

Thats what I was thinking actually ... but I might just grab an SKB hardcase for a homemade bass of mine.

    Thanks!

Someone recently posted a link on TB to a place where they purchased 10 bass case-sized shipping boxes for $10 and they arrived within a day or two. I'll try to find the link today.

Bicycle shops have a steady supply of very large boxes. Also, ask at a packing supply store for a "large mirror box". I get them at "California Caster" for $6, and with some cutting and folding they work great for basses.

Seconded on the bicycle shops. Honestly, I've also gotten boxes from Guitar Center and other shops...just find out when they get deliveries and ask them not to smash one.

If anyone in the bay area wants a nice box for free, pm or email me.

Ended up being $45 for 6 boxes, delivered. So for the same price as one custom box, I got 5 spares.

    Thanks!
