Like a custom bass maker using Fender pickups, or Alembic. Or someone using a Lakland bridge.

  2. i think its impossible to make a completely self made custom because the parts have to be made somewhere, whether it be tuning key brands such as gotoh or hipshot, from bridges from fender, hipshot, or badass and even pickups from bartolini, nordstrand, fender etc, and even then some people like other brand pickups so it all depends on what one would initially want

I've been experimenting with winding my own pickups and developing a headless tuner that's hidden inside the body. It's entirely possible to make a 100% self-made instrument, but only if you have the know-how and the resources.

The parts for Wal basses are all their own except for the strap screws.
