My gf recently bought a new PC that didn't come with any virus/spyware protection software. I was wondering if there was any good, free offering on the market right now.

I use Panda, & it seems to work fine
  5. And if you can't figure out what virus you've got...MalwareBytes is free (and good) and can help a lot of times.

If you want to print it all out and take it to an expert to let him/her figure it out..then download 'Hijack This'. (free).

While it's designed to work in conjunction with one of their security appliances, the standalone client does a good job with AV.
I have one of their firewalls.
