I searched, but all I found was a thread no one responded to. Going to St. Louis next weekend for the first time, any cool bass stores? Thanks
No, the pickings in stores is very weak down this way. No one has much in the way boutique basses, or even alot of nice factory basses. It was not always that way though. McMurray's was really nice until about 2003, and then it just died. Right now, Fazio's in West County is nice, and I personally like Mojo's in Edwardsville, IL, both stores are twenty from downtown going east or west. Near downtown, Gravity Strings is the best bet. It is about a mile or so south of Busch Stadium.
Check out Eddies guitars. It isn't a bass store, but they have some nice gear. I've bought several items there both when I lived there and since I moved to Texas.
i live in oakville (about as far south in stl county as you can get). theres zarkies down this way, which carries a few esp ltd basses, peaveys, and a few samicks. the gc in crestwood carries mostly fender basses, but theres a few schecters and ibanezes to be seen. theres also a place in webster groves called the music folk. i havent been there in over a year, but they have a few upright basses, and they had a $1200 acoustic bass in there i messed with quite a few times. theres really not much in the way of boutique bass stores to be seen in st. louis as far as i know of
Empire Guitars in St. Charles carried them, but its owner died last year. Check and see if they are still around. If not, the closest dealers are Springfield, Illinois or Cape Girardeau, MO.
Gravity is just a great hang. It's a small, funky shop with lot's of personality, and IMO one of the few 'pro' shop left in St. Louis. It's more guitar oriented, but they have a pretty full array of the Mesa Bass stuff in-house, and a few G&L"s, etc. on the wall. It's also close to a couple of GREAT music venues (on Broadway)... the Broadway Oyster Bar, and BB's Jazz, Blues, and Soups. Eddie's Guitars is a GREAT shop in Maplewood (a little West of downtown), and has a nice selection of Eden, Fender basses, Ric's, Hoffners, Music Man and a few other 'high end but mainstream' type instruments. Nice people also.
Glad seeing a thread about my hometown! I was born & raised in STL and lived there my entire life until my family and I relocated to Charlotte 3 years ago. I miss the music scene in STL - there has always been many very talented local bands in the area...cant say the same for my new city. Many a night spent at Kennedys or Mississippi Nights...
I would say less than a half hour if the traffic is not bad. The main freeway, I-64 is pretty jacked up due to construction. Look on a map and get on Manchester Rd. that will take by Eddie's.
