Any harm in subbing 10s???

Discussion in 'Amps and Cabs [BG]' started by Rockbobmel, Jan 26, 2003.

  1. I picked up a Mesa Powerhouse 1000 yesterday with a few torn 10s in it for dirt cheap.
It has EV 10s in it. I think 150 watt ones 8 ohms.

I took em all out and replaced them with 4 Eden XL 10s out of a 4-10XLT. They work fine and sound good but they are really moving a lot.
I'll prolly have the EVs reconed. but not for now.

Will this hurt the Eden XLs?
I heard of using Eden speakers in Mesa cabs before..

If the speakers move more than they did in the Eden it could be that the Mesa is tuned higher than the Eden so it takes more movement to produce the really low frequencies. (I don't know if that's true for sure.) They'll probably be fine as long as you don't drive them too hard.
  3. I just realized that one of the leads came off the lower speaker, so I hooked it back up and the speakers do not move as far now.

how does your cab sound with the Eden speakers in it
  5. EXCELLENT. I don't however, have a way to A/B them. The EVs had a carbon type feel/look to them. The magnet and basket look similar and equal quality.

But I don't know what I'm looking at anyway. If I end up reconing the EV 10s, I may have a stiffer paper done. Maybe kevlar? It prolly doesn't matter that much.
