Any idea what brand of bass this might be?

I have this bass with no identifying labels or engravings. It was suggested to me that it might be a '68 MIJ jazz. I can't positively identify it by looking online, although I have found some "Cimar" (Ibanez) basses that look awfully similar.

The pickup guards are long gone; the knobs have been replaced. Here are a couple of shots. Any help would be appreciated!

That ain't any kind of jazz bass. At least not a fender.

Short scale, no brand. Probably 70s era catalog bass. Worth about $10

Probably $60 new in the 70s

What makes you say $10? I think it sounds great.

  5. No such thing.

And @Lesfunk is right, Fender had NOTHING to do with whatever this is.

  6. It's worth whatever anyone is willing to pay for it.

If you like the way it sounds, that's all that really maters.

Looks like a 60's import. Is the neck straight? Will it play in tune?

No, I wasn't suggesting it was a Fender, but a Japanese Fender knockoff. I'm just trying to figure out who made it, not claiming it's some wonderful vintage instrument.

Yes, the intonation is pretty good. Neck looks good.

That's right. If you like it, play and enjoy.

The rounded corners on the J-type pickups say made in Japan, '70-ish. The headstock looks painted over. It's not worth troubling your mind about.

For sure. I'd still like to know who made it, though, if possible. Just thought someone might be able to point me in the right direction.

    Not excessively troubled, just curious.

If it sounds good, plays good, IT IS GOOD!
I really dig the funky looks. I wouldn't have any problem playing it.

The workings of the Japanese instrument industry at that time cannot be too reliably decoded today. Might be Chushin, might be Fuji, might be any one of their subcontracted operators. Do you have a pic of the neck plate?

I would think that it's very probable that both basses came from the same factory.
A possible explanation of the pickups could be different years/same model...

Probably 70s, though? Not interested in the value, I just like having instruments with a bit of history!
