I need some experienced opinions on the best settings for the output level on the J-retro preamp.

It really depends, are you trying to keep the same volume level between the active and passive modes? My passive mode is emergency only so I set my gain pots to 100% to start then I put my screw driver back in and so it is pointing as close to 12 o'clock as possible then backed down to about 11 o'clock. I run my volume knob about the same, I turn it all the way up then back off about two notches if you were looking at a clock. I find these preamps to be a little on the noisy side when they are cranked wide open, but I love the way it sounds in my Lakland Daryl Jones.
