Yes - that’s the real crime. Plus wearing a sweater to a gig. JK. Seriously, the surface mounted plate doesn’t bug me too much – it definitely doesn’t compromise the integrity of the attachment. Yes they should have used the CNC machine on the rear of the neck base so that it recessed/mounted flush. That would take a little more time and programming and might result in some scrapped necks if there are any issues with the wood - unlikely though. I just looked at a number of my basses quickly - a bit older Fenders, Sadowsky‘s, etc. and all of them surface mount their plate. They also recess those damn screws!
