Any Parrot-heads here ?

  1. The wife and I are heading up to Denver tonight to see Mr. Buffett, and I started wondering if there are any other fans here in TB-land

I'm not exactly what you would call a hard core Parrot Head, but I do visit Key West every month or so and Buffet has a mansion in Palm Beach not so far from my far more humble abode. I've eaten in Buffet's Key West restaurant Margaritaville and even bought a T-shirt in the store beside it. I do like some of Buffet's music and feel no Florida backyard cookout would be quite right without his music playing in the background along with reggae, ska, salsa and merenque.

    I'm not a fan, but he's cool.

  4. I like Jimmy Buffett's music. You can never feel sad after hearing "Volcano."

I heard an interesting rumour that he used to be in the Coast Guard, but got kicked out due to Marijuana use....anyone know if it's true??

I'm not what you would call a huge fan, but my cousin is. He sent my father a greatest hits or something, and that usually resides in my cd pouch for the train trips to university.
I love margarittaville, changes in attitudes, A pirate looks at 40, nautical wheelers, amongst others. Can anyone recommend any albums?

Not really related, but who here likes John Prine? :ninja:

Anyone who consumes alcoholic beverages should appreciate Mr. Buffett and his music.

Me, me, me! John Prine is great.

Growing up in the sailing capital of America kind of ruined Buffetts music for me. Complete overexposure.

    I like Prine and Buffet.

Buffet, to me, is best enjoyed on a hot summer day, with a cold drink and a relaxing atmosphere.

I don't really play his music at other times. His music really reflects the tropical scene, to the point where you don't have to be at the ocean to feel it. He takes you there.

That sums it up beautifully for me. Buffet's music personifies the laid back Caribbean tropics (and Key West is the "Northern-most island" of the Caribbean.) He got his start playing in hot, sweaty, smokey Key West dives and still owns one there today. He knows the scene and the crowd. He knows what they like.

He's a native of Mobile, so it's kind of a law around here that you have to be a fan.
Alot of summer evenings my friends and I will lash a few boats together out on the bay, or head down to some of the pavillions at the beach to have a cook-out and some cold beverages. It never fails that Buffet make it into the CD player. Whether the friends are hip/hop, punk, metal, or country fans, everyone knows all the words to every Buffet song. The best in party-time music!
And I dig some John Prine, too.

  13. For the record, the show was great as usual. This was the first time I saw him inside (unpredictable Colorado spring time weather) and I must say that even with the beach balls flying all over the place and the giant shark, Bruce, soaring over head during "Fins"; outside is the only way to see Buffett.

My band plays a lot of JB...used to play more of it, but you can overdo it and it's always easy to pull one out of your back pocket when you need to (if I have to suffer through Margaritaville one more time I think I'm going to lose it). Faves to play are:

One Particular Harbor (a lot of dynamic range going on there)
Son of a Son of a Sailor (great fretless tune)
A Pirate Looks at 40 (dead easy and very quiet, but if you're over 40 as all of us are it really resonates)
Volcano (gotta get the groove and the humor right or it won't work...the other two band members [guitarist/lead singer and flautist] are married and she abuses him throughout the whole extended ending bit...hysterical)

    And of course,

    Cheeseburger in Paradise

  19. Artist: Jimmy Buffett
Album: Son Of A Son Of A Sailor
Title: Cheeseburger In Paradise(in Album Son Of A Son Of A Sailor)

    Cheeseburger in paradise
    By: jimmy buffett
    1978
Tried to amend my carnivorous habits
    Made it nearly seventy days
Losin' weight without speed, eatin' sunflower seeds
Drinkin' lots of carrot juice and soakin' up rays

But at night i'd had these wonderful dreams
    Some kind of sensuous treat
Not zuchinni, fettucini or bulghar wheat
But a big warm bun and a huge hunk of meat

    Chorus:
    Cheeseburger in paradise (paradise)
Heaven on earth with an onion slice (paradise)
Not too particular not too precise (paradise)
I'm just a cheeseburger in paradise

Heard about the old time sailor men
They eat the same thing again and again
Warm beer and bread they said could raise the dead
Well it reminds me of the menu at a holiday inn

Times have changed for sailors these days
When i'm in port i get what i need
Not just havanas or bananas or daiquiris
But that american creation on which i feed

    Chorus:
    Cheeseburger in paradise (paradise)
Medium rare with mustard 'be nice (paradise)
Heaven on earth with an onion slice (paradise)
I'm just a cheeseburger in paradise

I like mine with lettuce and tomato
Heinz 57 and french fried potatoes
Big kosher pickle and a cold draft beer
Well good god almighty which way do i steer for my

    Chorus:
    Cheeseburger in paradise (paradise)
Makin' the best of every virtue and vice (paradise)
Worth every damn bit of sacrifice (paradise)
To get a cheeseburger in paradise
To be a cheeseburger in paradise
I'm just a cheeseburger in paradise

    Coda:
I like mine with lettuce and tomato
Heinz 57 and french fried potatoes
Big kosher pickle and a cold draft beer
Well good god almighty which way do i steer for my
