Anybody from England out there

Discussion in 'Miscellaneous [BG]' started by spectorman, Jan 20, 2002.

  1. Anybody from the Midlands, or even England out there to swap gigs with, or just chat Bass. I am a new member from Rugeley in the midlands, I have tried the site at Harmony but most of the contributers seem to be gear snobs, and not really contributing anything worthwile.

    Hi Spectorman

I know what you mean about HC. I was born in Worcester so I'm a Midlander by birth though I'm a Welshman by heart! ;)

  3. Welcome to Talkbass! There's plenty of bass chat to be had here.

I grew up in Birmingham, but moved away when I was 18. I still have reli's there and a couple are even bass players!

I don't know much about the gigging scene in B'ham, but The Bass Centre were extremely helpful in B'ham and Manchester ( I know this isn't the Midlands!!) when I wanted to order a cab mail order. I can highly recommend them.

Edit: Erm moderators..... shouldn't this be somewhere else?

    It certainly should. :)

Spectorman, welcome to Talkbass. I'm from Liverpool, by the way. I think that David Beyhara (sorry if I've spelt that wrong, Dave) is from Birmingham. Anyway, this is off to Miscellaneous.

Well - anything beyond Watford, is "Up North" as far as I'm concerned!

2 threads in one day on UK bassists - must be a record. ;)

    Hi David,
Have you seen or heard of a band from the midlands called "The Joanne Shaw - Taylor Band"?
The lead guitarist is 16 years old (Joanne).
She is one of the BEST blues guitarists I have ever heard.

I have heard of them, but haven't yet seen them. I bought the first few copies of 'Guitarist' after is absorbed 'Bassist' - they had a section of the magazine where they review demo CDs. JST got her disc reviewed in there, and a track was included on the magazine cover CD! Pretty good stuff as I remember - I'll have to dig out that CD later.

The best young blues/rock guitarist in Birmingham is the singer/guitarist in a trio called The Pressure Group. An AMAZING singer (can switch between Marvin Gaye and Joe Cocker) and an AMAZING guitarist (Santana/Green/Clapton etc rolled into one). I've only seen them once - that was in Oct/Nov, and they don't seem to have gigged since. GREAT band.

Joanne Shaw Taylor appeared at our school fete last year.
I booked her after seeing that article in Guitarist.
They played for about an hour and a half.
As I recall most people were watching open mouthed, they were awesome!
Well worth seeing, she's got a web site here:
    http://www.joanneshawtaylor.com/
(Some good mp3 downloads and Videos)
Most of their gigs seem to be in and around the Birmingham area.
