Anyone else's GK Legacy make a POP when going in and out of mute status?

Discussion in 'Amps and Cabs [BG]' started by musicman556, Jul 21, 2021.

  1. Mine does. And it's annoying. Especially in a small/quiet church situation. It happens regardless of the cabs into which it is plugged, Subways or Aguilar SL.

It's not ridiculously loud, but enough to be annoying and noticeable.... about like a light tap on a kick drum, and similar in tone. I didn't try seeing if it was louder or softer depending master volume, because I don't want to have to touch the master every time I want to go on mute... kinda defeats the whole purpose of the switch, imho!

What I'm trying to discern is if this is something normal with the Legacy line (mine is the 800) or if I should send back my brand new amp for another. Thanks in advance for any thoughts or ideas you have to offer!

Does it do this with all basses? Does it do this with the cable unplugged from the amp?

  3. It does it with 2 basses so far, a passive P and an 18v custom LowEnd. If it makes any difference, my volume knob discipline is really good, so this is happening even though I have the volume 100% off/down on the basses.

I haven't tried it unplugged. Will do that Sunday, as I didn't bring the amp home tonight.

I’ve had the same noise on mine since I got it. Similar to when you turn on an old Mesa Walkabout (or a couple dozen other older amps), but a lot quieter?

  5. I don't know about the old Walkabout noises. :-(

This isn't an internal amp "click" or something like that, just to clarify. It is kinda between a "pop" and a "thump", and is amplified artifact sent to the speaker cab. I'm unsure if it's going through the DI. Oo. I should check that with our sound guy first thing Sunday morning.

  6. Alright AgedHorse, I tested this a little more Sunday. Makes no difference whether a cord is plugged into the input or not (notice nothing is plugged in for the video shown below) and the volume of the thumping sound is the same regardless of the the gain or master volume settings. This happens no matter what cabs are hooked up, be they Mesa, Aguilar, or Ampeg.

This is really annoying me the more I think about/deal with it. A mute switch should be just that in operation, imho... MUTE! Your TT800 doesn't do this, lol! I LOVE the sound and simplicity of this Legacy, this one thing is just a fly in the ointment to me.

The thing I neglected to check was whether this is happening through the DI out. I recorded this little video before we got to practicing Sunday morning, so the full system wasn't on yet and I couldn't ask our sound-babe (aka: my wife) to verify this for me. I have just not used the mute switch in fear of summoning the dreaded "POP!" heard 'round the world.

Whaddya think? I'm about to call my Sweetwater guys and just ask what he thinks, too.

Edited to tag @rag . Thank you!

Maybe check with @rag ? He engineered the amp and owns the company.

At least you have confirmed that it's a "within the amp" issue.

Do you have the amp connected to a grounded power source? Depending on the layout, voltage potentials within the audio grounding network can sometimes be made worse when the protective grounding on the power source is lifted.

  10. I assume that to be the case, but cannot confirm that and do not have the tools to do so myself. This phenomenon is the same both at my home which was built in 2006 and at our church.

Would the fact that the mute switches on my Tone Hammer 500 and TT800 work perfectly/silently at both locations give any indication of this?

(turning the master down) Oh God that hurts!

  13. Lol! Cute.

But in my situation that is less than ideal as well. With the fast initial taper of the master on this amp (tied with cranking the trim as recommended in the manual) I am BARELY using any master while playing at church, and it is SUPER touchy. Just a whisker of knob movement is the difference between a whisper and a scream here, and what I want is a normal speaking voice.

Sure, I COULD use the master as a mute, but I would inevitably come in way too hot or too soft when it's time to play again.

Using the Trim would be a better, but still less than ideal solution.

    Nope, different circuits, different architecture.

Plus, the knobs are easily turned when you have a cable laid over the top or something like that. When I take it out of the carrying bag the knobs have moved since I packed it last. Just my experience with a Legacy 500, which I;m very happy with. I've never noticed the thud when engaging or disengaging the mute switch. I'll be listening next practice session.

Edit: Yes, mine also makes the thudding noise. Now that I know it's there, we'll see how long it takes before it becomes annoying.

I never used a MUTE on any amp and I never had a cable move my knobs. I just don't like the thought of cutting off the power with the volume up. Maybe I'm stuperstitious (Seinfeld reference) but I always turn the volume down before I power the amp up also. Let it warm up a bit.

Just cough when you hit the mute button, like Peter Griffin does when he farts.

What is heard cannot be unheard. Lol. All good.

  20. Hey @rag I just want to let you know I'm not mad or anything, just curious at this point, and would like to know if this is normal operation for the amp. :)

Heck, I like this Legacy 800 so much I just ordered 2 brand new GK Neo 112 cabs today! I figure I should be a real man and get myself an honest-to-Gallien stack! :D
