I was listening to Chris Isaak's Heart Shaped World today and was paying special attention to Rowland Salley's tone. It looks like he's using a P-Bass on the inside pic of the band, but there's really no mention of amps, cabs, etc. I think his tone on this album is awesome -- low and smooth like butter, but with a bit of a growly edge to it. Anyone know anything about this cat and his gear? Anyone else a fan of his tone?

Roly Salley was profiled a few years back in Bass Player, you could check their archives for the exact issue. It had a rundown of his gear.

I have seen pics of him with P basses as well as StingRays.

Prior to working with Chris Isaak, he lived in Woodstock, NY and while there wrote and recorded his song "Killing the Blues" which is unique in that it has NO rhymes in the entire song...very cool! It's been covered by a number of folks over the years.

He also has instructional tapes which are available through Homespun Tapes.

And if you get Showtime or VH1, he shows up as himself in the "Chris Isaak Show".
