So my wife's car is a 2002 Honda CRV. She inherited it from her dad 10 years ago. We use it several times a year to pull our tent trailer for camping. Plus, many picnics I feel bad as we have never cleaned the interior. It was so gross we just got used to it. I spent 8 hours solid today cleaning the inside. Pulled out all the carpets, scrubbed and cleaned all the inside carpets. Shampooed everything. Filled up a good sized garbage bag. Then....I was cleaning the back, and pulled out the carpet in the back, pulled out the back plastic cover and lo and behold...ITS A PICNIC TABLE!! We have been on dozens of camping trips and was always missing table space. I can't believe I have been driving around with this awesome little table in the back. Its an amazing design. I cannot believe we have never found it. DOH!!!!!!!!!!!
The spare tire is on the back. there is also a nice big space under the table I never used as well. Maybe it was meant for a mini spare. Its a tough little car for sure. 250,000km and still runs great. The only weird thing is it eats bearings. it seems like every time we switch over from summer to winter and vice versa we are changing a bearing.
The picnic table was a well-loved feature of that car. Owners had a fit when it disappeared from later generations.
I had a '99 & a '03. Loved them. The sales guy showed me the card/picnic table. https://www.talkbass.com/attachments/256447-jpg.3440255/ See the scooped-out area? That's an ice basin.
That's hilarious. I had an 06 for 4 years, which upon investigation apparently came with a picnic table, and I had no idea the entire time I owned it. This is the first I've ever heard of that. They never mentioned it when I bought it at a Honda dealer, either.
In that design era for that vehicle, the spares are all full-size, mounted on the back, and the tire kit is stored in a side compartment in the rear, as opposed to under the trunk area.
I have an '05, and I use the space under the table as a pseudo-trunk all the time. Haven't had any use for the table, though...
Yes! I had a 1998 and it was a great car. I knew about the picnic table but sadly, I'm not sure if I ever used it. For shame!!!
Had a 99 CRV that I bought used and drove for at least 10 years, maybe longer. Yes, it had the picnic table and you could hide things in the back where a spare tire would go. Gave it away two years ago when I bought a used 2014 CRV. The guy I gave it too drove the 99' from San Francisco with his wife and three kids. Last I heard it was still going strong. I liked the old one but I look the new (for me) CRV. The 2014 has more power than the 99. Comes in handy on the freeway when you need to gun it, also better for San Francisco hills and driving to Lake Tahoe. The new one doesn't have the picnic table. Both of the were two wheel drive models and both had plenty of room for all my bass equipment. But then I don't have much stuff. A bass, a small amp, surge protector, tuner and cables. Plus I sometimes bring my own stool.
Never could quite understand the hate for this car. Was it ugly? #$!% yes. But it had slightly above average reliability ratings, and was a Swiss Army knife of a car.
My wife and I had one of those CR-Vs. It was a great vehicle! And the hidden picnic table was very cool, which I had made use of a number of times. It held up very well. We kept it for 11 years and actually got a very good resale price on it, considering its age. We would have kept it but we felt like exploring a different vehicle.
