I bought two Eden D112XLT bass cabs a few years ago from two different Guitar Centers. One was a few pou ds heavier than the other cab. So last week I took the speakers out of both cabs. The heavier cab had the Eminence Professional Line Kappa-12A speaker (16 lbs of heavy speaker). Just curious if anyone on Talkbass was familiar with these and what you thought? I am going to replace the speaker in the other cab, maybe with one of these, or replace both cabs with a different type of 12" bass speaker. Thanks for your help.
Which one sounds better? No guarantee the Eminence sounds better than the stock driver. Swappi g speakers and improving a bass cab are not always the same thing.
I'm curious as how the two cabs sound together and also if you have A/B'd them against each other to see which you preferred. I have no experience with the Kappa 12 pro but I am a big fan of the Kappa 15 pro.
They were bought from two parts of the country. So no trying before buying. I just want two of the same speaker to match things up for my own personal state of mind. Below is a picture of the speaker on the other Eden D112XLT cab I own.
Optimal performance from a speaker depends on the enclosure it is in as much as or more than the speaker itself. Does the "upgraded" speaker actually perform better than the stock speaker IN THE CAB? You may find that the Eminence is actually an expensive downgrade; hence my initial question in post #2. Which speaker sounds better? If the stock driver sounds better, you are probably better off trying to source another instead of a second Kappa. There IS also a slight chance they pair well, so consider that. Edit: also check to see if the porting is the same on both cabs. The cab that had the Kappa may have been modified to better suit the swap-out. It could also be a failed attempt to tune the box for the Kappa.
I never had the stock speaker in the cab. I understand the science behind speaker and cabs and air being pushed with hz-mhz, ohms etc. No need for a history lesson. I am asking about the specific speaker itself. Eminence Kappa 12A
Both speakers are from Eminence: FAQ | Eminence Speaker We attach a small label to either the side of the magnet or on the inside arm of the basket with our spec number and manufacturing/date code on it. The spec number will begin with the size of the speaker (i.e. for a 10" it would be 101123). The manufacturing/date code number is as follows: EIA# for ESC Year Week Serial # Metal Group 67 -01 12A 0217 G1 The "67" tells you that the speaker was built by Eminence, the "01" indicates that the speaker was built in 2001, and the "12" means it was built the 12th week of the year. Here is a video explaining our label codes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yOx4JYHW3-w
Nobody can tell you because we can't possibly know how well tuned the cabinet is for either driver. The speaker itself is only a small part of the equation, you may not need a history lesson but perhaps a little more science might be helpful. The Kappa Pro 12A might be good but it just as well might be terrible in that cabinet.
