Anyone from Florida?

Discussion in 'Miscellaneous [BG]' started by Hobbes, Apr 29, 2001.

  1. I might be going there for hols this summer, and last time I was in America the stuff in music shops was loads cheaper than over here in the UK. Anyhow, I was just wondering if anyone could recommend some good (and cheap) music shops, mainly around the Orlando/Tampa region. Thanks in advance for any information anyone has.

If you will be in the Orlando area, check out the bass equipment store run by Dave LaRue and Beaver Felton. It is called Bass Central and is located at 124 Lake Avenue, Orlando, FL, 32751.
The phone number is (800) 545-8813.

Gard, who posts regularly here works there, plus he studied with Dave La Rue. The store specializes in bass equipemnt, rather than being a general music equipment place. Also, they offer worldwide shipping. Bass Central just might be the very best store for a bass player in Florida.

  3. Ya beat me to it, JO!!!

....sheesh, one overnight gig in Clearwater, and I get snaked... heh....

One correction though, our address is no longer at Lake Av. in Maitland (the shop was never actually IN Orlando, just north of there). It's now:

    181 Oxford Rd.
Fern Park, FL and I forget the darn zip code  (Fern Park is VERY small...so there's only one zip)

If you know the Orlando area at all, we're located directly behind the Orlando Jai-Alai fronton. The phone number is of course still the same.

Hobbes, definitely make it a point to stop in at Bass Central, even if you can't buy anything. We don't call it "bass porn" for nothing! ;) If you're looking for "cheap" as in low-cost low-quality stuff, well, we don't have much of that. But, if you're looking for "cheap" as in excellent instruments for excellent value, BC is the place to go. If you want a good deal on an Ibanez or the like (generic stuff), I'd suggest Sam Ash/MARS/name your favorite chain music store here instead for your purchase. We don't stock that stuff, it's best to leave that market to them.

Example of a great deal: MTD Kingston 5 string bass, which is an INCREDIBLE instrument - period, for $471 (sorry don't know how to convert that to British Pounds). Easily the equal or better of anything under a grand, US $'s. We usually have at least one in stock.

Let DirtyRoadCola (Neal, he works there part time as well) or myself know when you're going to be in the Orlando area, and we'll give you directions and try to make sure one of us is there to help you out. If you have any specific questions before, just ask either here on the board or via e-mail and either of us will do our best to answer them.
  4. Thanks a lot for you help, really appreciate it. I'm not sure when exactly I'll be over there (haven't even booked the holiday yet), but I'll definitely post nearer the time when I know what the dates will be. Oh and by the way, I'm not after an Ibanez. Right, gotta run and write my essay on problems and solutions for British tennis!!! Erm..problems: we're crap?!?

Sheesh. So Gard, does that mean when I move down to Port St. Lucie, and I come up there, I can lay my hands on some stuff that's worth more than I am? Oooo I hope so. Nothing like screwing around on some good gear. Of course, that might bot be wise to let me in a place like that. I'd be the first one in and the last one out...every single freakin day, if gas and time allowed.

I just spoke with Beaver today and am going to swing by Saturday to try out a Kingston 5, I already tried a 4 at MAE in Ft. Lauderdale, and if they had a 5, I definitely would have bought it!! Maybe I'll even get to meet you Gard!!
  7. Brendan -

Yeah, there's plenty of incredible stuff just hanging on the wall in the store. Fodera, Warwick, Wal, Zon, Modulus, Alembic.....and then there's all the amps......crazy stuff. Spending any time in BC will ruin any other music store for you (unless you get to hang at someplace like BassNW ;) ). Luckily for you, you'll be living about an hour and a half away, so it won't be TOO tempting. :D

    Chris -

Yeah, those K5's are really impressive, even if you don't take price into consideration. I've been tempted to get one, just to have the dang thing. If you're in early on Saturday it's likely that I'll be there, I've got a gig that nite (it's in town, you otta hang and catch the band...you like Santana? You'll dig us...), but I'll probably be in until mid-afternoon. DirtyRoadCola (Neal) works there on Saturdays as well, so you'll likely meet him too.

Damn, it says on your website that you played Clearwater Beach on Saturday!! I live about 10 minutes from there...oh well, hopefully I can stay for the show this Saturday.

Yeah, oops, guess I should be more diligent about posting on the "gigs" forum, huh?

The gig went well, too bad you didn't get there. We had a lotta fun, good crowd, check the "walrus" thread down in OT for a quick review of the gig. It was a Tito Jr gig, not a "real" band gig. The thing Sat. nite here in O'do is a RM&SS's gig, big difference (the Tito stuff is wonderful, but I'm a bit prejudiced towards our own material). You missed 'Retha's onstage debut (my new EUB), but you can catch her second show...heh.

Anyhow, see you Sat. at BC most likely....
