My guitarist wants to get rid of it and he offered it for $100! Seems to be a good deal, and I've got an Ampeg BA210 v3, with an 8 ohm extension out. I hooked it up and it sounds pretty great! I'm just unfamiliar with this model, and was wondering if anyone else had thoughts on it as a bass cab extension. It is closed back. There is little info available as this one is 200w and most of the other "Thiele" cabs have a celestion pushing 90w. Thanks y'all! This is the cabinet
The earlier Theile cabs were loaded with EVM12L drivers thus the 200W rating. They are great guitar speakers, but have pretty limited output with bass. The mechanical power handling and output below 100Hz is extremely limited. I think you would need a pair for even a low volume gig to avoid damaging the driver, and don't expect any fat on the low end. The cabinet is fairly close to an EV TL806...see attached. Note the tuning of the port (Fb) is 75hz and the driver will quickly at lower frequencies. F3 is 83Hz and pretty much falls like a rock below this frequency.
That's exactly the info I was looking for! Thanks so much. Maybe it's a flip it for $200 kind of situation =)
That's the real Thiele if it has the EVM. No idea why they started putting C90 Black Shadows in em (which to me have a distinctive hair metal sound). You should be able to use it for bass at moderate volumes. I have had great results recording with cabs that roll off low end a bit (like a Buster wedge)... the low mids/mids seem to come out nicely.
If it sounds good, it is good. Give it a push and listen. It’s a good sounding cab. At $100, it is worth keeping for practice. Mate it with a low wattage tube amp down the road if need be or use it as a monitor. A good investment. I used to have two 412 cabs with EVM-12L’s in them. They did the job fine. The only problem was the weight.
Didn't EV discontinue the EVMs for awhile, and then reissue them. I assume the C90s become the preferred driver during the interim. I have actually played bass through a couple of EVM loaded Mesa Theile cabs at the Musicians Friend store in Oregon years ago. I remember they sounded nice but the lows were very lean, and they bottomed out well under what I would consider moderate volume. I was actually surprised/dissapointed as I have been able to get more volume out of JBL E120s in open back cabs. I do think they would record well at low volume.
It's an ok cabinet up to about 150 watts RMS for bass, and much better when used with a HPF at 50-60Hz
Buy the cab that is a steal. Remove the EV and install this speaker (make sure you get an 8 ohm speaker): "Eminence Beta-12A-II 12" Driver" from www.parts-express.com! Sell the EV for $100.00 and you will have yourself a $75.00 bad ass speaker cab. You will be forever in my debt and I will let you slide on repayment. I am familiar with this amp and this exact extension cab paring and it works great!
Wow, now this is a great idea. Thanks for such a specific response too; I think I'll do just that! Get more power out of my BA-210 =)
