I love my mono bag.. but the piping around the edges keeps cracking and disintegrating. Mono replaced the bag due to this issue last year under warranty, but now it's happening again. I don't use the bag that much because I alternate between gig bags and hard cases, so it's not like I'm beating this thing to death on the road. When I'm not using it, I store it in a closet. I live in SoCal, so it's not getting exposed to extreme temps or sitting out in the sun.

I've attached a few pics so you can see what I'm seeing. Just curious if more TB'ers are having this issue.

    Thanks

    Same issue here...

As long as the integrity of the bag holds up, it doesn't bother me.

I’ve owned a Vertigo for 5 years, and the piping on mine is still pristine.

Hmm. That’s good to know. Does the Vertigo have the same rubber coated piping or is it something different? I’ve seen a couple of other threads with the same issue I’m having so I know I’m not alone.

No, I believe it’s the same material. It’s called Hypalon, and it’s a very durable synthetic rubber used for inflatable rafts and the like. MONO also uses it for the bottom of the M80 bag and for the ends of their guitar straps.

This is the second such case I’ve seen in the last few days, and I can honestly say that I’ve never encountered the problem before. As I mentioned, my Vertigo is about five years old. I also have an M80 which I bought new a year and a half ago, and there is virtually no difference between the two bags in terms of wear on the piping.

I would contact MONO customer service about this. MONO products have a lifetime warranty, and they have great customer service, so I’m sure they’ll make it right.

  6. I've got two Mono bags (both about five+ years old, one black and one gray), always gently used (and 99% of the time just kept in the house, though I open/close one of them 4-5 times a week indoors), and both have major cracking as you do. As a matter of fact, I'd say mine is worse (split wide open most of the way down each side once it's to the body width, fully exposing the inner piping). I'm located in upstate New York, so they may have been outside when below freezing once or twice, but just for the dash to the car. Never kept in the sun. Despite the cracking, I love them and don't worry about them (I notice it once or twice a year, but then just shrug and forget again).

Strange. I live in Norway, and both my bags have been out for long walks in sub-zero temperatures, snow, blazing sun and pouring rain. Not a mark on either of them.

  8. Ah, but you have a much drier cold there (probably doesn't matter, though).

Depends where you are - inland, the cold is dry, but in the coastal areas it’s a different story. But you’re right, it probably doesn’t matter in any case.

It seems to me to be a case of defective materials, as the affected bags have cracked and broken piping for no apparent reason, whereas the piping on my bags shows no signs of wear at all, even after several years of frequent (and sometimes heavy) use.

It must be a bad batch of material or something, or they changed suppliers. I would think they use the same piping material on all their products. If it was universally bad then you would see more threads on forums and reviews about it.
