A friend of mine sent me his son's for a setup. Never seen a Squier like it. Welll made, nice sound....nothing like the Squiers I've seen (Jazz's & P's). I went out and bought a new one... $349 Canadian! What a deal! I'll post a pic when I get my camera back, in the meantime, I found this Fender MB5 on the net. Can't find the Squier version.

    Mine is black.

    Later edited.

Did a search within the forums and found that fretless5 has (had?) a Fender MB5 (pic follows)-

well, ive heared of a squire MB-4, and you can find those in the MF catolog for 180. i have yet to play one, but they look nice. the only difference between those and the fender MB-5's is that it has a p pup instead of a j pu at the neck position. they look nice, and i like the p/j combo that they sport.

    thats my input..

  4. Good deal!
I had an MB-5 (non Squier) until my guitarist talked me into selling it to him. I thought it was a pretty sweet axe, every bit as good as any MIJ Jazz and for quite a few $$$ less.

The neck was super smooth and quick and the PUPs were much hotter and growlier than on any Jazz I have ever owned.

Carolyn's Sunburst is cool, I have only seen them in black or white.

I really need to but that sucker back.

it really really looks intereting. aer the pickups on the 5 string version jazz style? are they easily upgradable? the bass looks interesting.
Xavier please tell us how does it sound, i'm in the market for a 5 string cheap instrument and this one could be great. i find interesting the kramer in the musicyo site too.

Arn't these related (sor of) to the Fender "Prophesy" line?

I also see alot of likeness to the Hartfield DR series in here also.

Upgradable? Well, mine is at the techs for a setup now and it's being fitted with a new bridge ( I hate it when the saddles slip and slide all over the place), and having the frets filed down (I like 'em really low). The pups are jazz type. It sounded pretty good to me, but what the heck do I know. I'll record a clip with it when I get it back, and post that together with a pic.

The Squier MB5 has an agathis body.

I actually bought this one for my daughter (but haven't told her that yet). She likes it. She'll love it when it gets back from the tech, and she finds out it's hers. That's next week, and I should post pics then (if I find my camera).

  14. I am currentyly playing a Fender MB-5. I like it quite a bit, it is Japanese made from about '90. I would guess the Fender version is quite a bit better in quality. Mine has a nice (but beat up) poplar body, sunburst finish, super groovy thin neck, laminated 3 piece with rosewood board. It came with a wide space bridge but it made the strings too wide for the board up by the neck joint. I put a nice looking black medium space bridge on it with black tuners, and then an EMG BTC active preamp. The battery even fit in the compartment with no additional routing - now it really kicks! Oh, and I had to sand the neck to take all of the chips out of the glossy finish. That helped the playability quite a lot. It's really a nice playing and sounding bass.

    Stay Low!

  17. where did you get the tuners & bridge in black?

  18. I have the MB-4 and it rocks! Sounds good, the Pewter Grey Metallic finish is beatiful, fast neck, not anything wrong with it, best Squier I've ever seen!

I love the bass is has a smooth and nice sound to it and when you want to crank it and crush the music depends on what your playing it works perfect.I also bought the Fender 60watt Rumble Amp its a sweet amp to great sound has 25 effects perfect for local shows  :bassist: :hyper: :D

  20. My 2nd bass was a White early-90s MIJ Fender MB-5 (I think they were MIJ only) exactly like the one in the original post. I got it used in April of '99 for $250. Anyway, I loved it. It felt great in my hands, played very very well, and had great tone. At the time, I wasn't a real big fan of Jazz basses, but was a fan of J pickups. I also really like the neck of the MB-5 better than a J5 neck. Much much smaller and easier to get around on when first starting out on a 5. I found it in the used room at the local shop and I just had to have it.

I owned it until late 2002. I will probably get another one, one of these days, if I can find one cheap enough. It would be a killer bass to upgrade. I'd imagine that with a set of EMGs and a Badass it would really smoke. Even without upgrades, though, it was a great bass.
