I had done it the last time at Parts Express and they did a decent job, but they closed their recone shop.

    Ideas?

    TIA

I would ask around your musical contacts in your city. I'm sure there must be someone who has had a driver reconed in your city.

How did you come to blow a 3015LF twice?? I'm curious 'cos I always thought that driver was about indestructible! :D

The first time was when my power amp (a QSC CX1202v) was bridged. That's 2200 watts RMS at full bandwidth and we played a reggae as an encore in a packed theater with everything cranking. I also hadn't played my Modulus Q6 in some time, so when I cranked the low end on it, smoke billowed out of the cabinet. The crazy thing was that I was so loud in the house and side fills, I didn't even notice. That sound crew loves bass.

The second time was a little more gradual. I used my rig as a backline (with only once channel of the QSC this time, so that's 800 watts RMS at full band width and .05%THD) and I think some of the other bass players got a little enthusiastic. On Tuesday night, about 3/4 of the way through my first set, it just gave up and the coil read open. When I put in my spare, it sounded a lot better than the previous one had. Also, the opening band on Tuesday had tried out my rig when I wasn't there and told me it was giving them some farting noises. When I looked at the preamp settings they used, I saw they had turned the bass knob up, which on an Alembic F2B is a hell of a lot of low end boost. I guess the moral is don't ever let other people play your rig, but I figure speakers are kind of like strings. They need to be changed every so often. My bandmates acted shocked when I told them the speaker blew. My wife knew right away it was no big deal as she's watched me blow speakers for more than 20 years! Her reaction was like mine. "Bummer. OK, what's next?" Luckily my in ear system is pretty robust, so once the FOH brought the bass up in the PA and got the subs moving, it was pretty good. Although it was apparent that before it blew, it was carrying a lot of the room.

I just found out that National Speaker now recones the 3015LF. Last time it blew, they couldn't get parts and even Eminence wasn't reconing them. $105 seems pretty reasonable.

Clearly, too much power, but the specifics might be helpful. I have several and I sometimes drive them hard.
Are you tuned down? Are you using fEARful 15/6 or 15 sub cabs? How much power?

EDIT: Just saw your reply to Paul, thanks!

Yup. There's driving them hard and then driving them 2200 watts too hard! When I had my rig back lined for the Last Waltz Revisited in Denver at the Fillmore the day before Thanksgiving, I had the 15/6/1 on one channel of the amp and a Sunn 200S on the other channel. Some of the guys drove the amp into light clipping (yes, it was stupid loud). The JBLs were fine, but I think the fEARful suffered a bit as it rattled and sounded thinner after that. What a great combination, though! All that JBL midrange goodness filled out with fEARful highs and lows.

Thanks for this. I remember the story about the first one, now.
I will always bring two cabs, if it is a theater or outdoors!

Yeah, usually one cabinet is more than enough for me. I'm a little more aware of the levels these days. My main rig has a bridged Peavey IPR 3000, which is a little less power, but on NYE with the new driver I was barely lighting up the active lights, let alone the limiter. I think the old driver had problems. I'm hoping that National will recone what is now my spare better than Parts Express did.

Tri-State Loudspeaker does good work. They usually turn around quickly, too.
