I'd like to find a Standard jazz bass at some point kinda soon. I really like the japanese ones...does anyone know when they stopped making them? know what they run for?

IME, the most desirable Japanese Fenders are those built in the eighties.

I have seen plenty of 80s MIJ jazzes in the $350-450 range. They are pretty easy to come accross if you look. It is pretty rare to look on ebay without seeing at least one.

I have also seen at least a dozen of them at various online retail sites.

I don't know the exactly answer to your question. I know that Fender continues to build some basses in Japan. IIRC, I have seen "standard" jazzes MIJ dated as late as 1998.

    Fender went "Mexi" circa 1992-1993.

They still make excellent Fenders in Japan, notably the Marcus Miller and Jaco signature Jazz Basses. Both sell in Japan for approx 70,000yen (about US$600), and are of excellent quality.
