OK. Show me this bass with the same quilt, but with
    A. natural finish, and
    B. 3-tone sunburst.

Okay, can you add a matching headstock to this Mike Lull? Thanks in advance, and no - it isn't mine. Yet... *insert Dr. Evil laughter here*

Not bad. That bile yellow was as close as I could get, too. You had to have cut it out of the carpet and put it back, otherwise the carpet would be pink.

Anyway, I've been thinking about having Pat Wilkins do a refinish on it, but I'm worried about going from dark to light. The existing finish on it is perfect, but I'd like a different color.

Tell you what, I'll work it and try to get a better looking natural color. Some layer blending should do the trick

Hmmmm ... wonder if you took it to grayscale then back to color.

No, I just copied and pasted the body; removed the neck, pickup and bridge; created a new layer with a solid color that looked close to natural wood. Then toy with the layer styles.

maybe try to replace the colors rather than spending lots of time masking things off?

It's not that easy. If you could see the actual number of colors in that bass top alone, it's easier to lasso out what you need, and fiddle with masking form there.
