http://www.openoffice.org/ its that freebie of open sourced office software. how would a regular joe who uses MS Office like it? is it more stable or less so due to the open source nature? is it more efficient? better? faster? cleaner? beuller?
Tried it and hated it...it was too slooooooow! I much prefer to use gnumeric for spreadsheets and Abiword (www.abiword.com I think) for word processing. Abiword looks prettier too Have you looked on Sourceforge for those sort of packages? I'm presuming you're using Linux (or similar) although Abiword is available for windows too. KK
It is the same as StarOffice, the difference is Sun includes some improved ability to read M$ proprietary file formats and a few extra fonts in StarOffice. We use it at the office here (an advertising firm), we are down to only two machines with an M$ OS on them and that will change soon (the only thing delaying one of them is the delivery of the new accounting software). We do a lot of spreadsheet work, and find the OO spreadsheet to work better for us with regard to formula handling.
We only has StarOffice 5.2 installed for a short time, and were already using a different (SQL) database. Thanks for pointing that out. We have been using OpenOffice instead, it has been working for us. Other than a new employee saying "this looks different than the version I am used to..." (he didn't know it wasn't M$ Office) things are going well. edit: (he knows it is a different Office suite now, since we had to retrain him on the few keyboard shortcuts he knew...)
