Anyone using or have access to a Hofner bass blade pick up? Hofner used them from the late 60's to the 90's. From some dimensions i've seen i think they'll drop straight in to my Epi Viola to make one v mean Violin bass. However i've got a couple of questions: Does anyone know the DC resistance of one? Some people are saying they are single coils inside, some say humbuckers (they sure look like humbuckers to me, but i could be wrong) Whats the distance between screwholes for the PU? (ie. the holes in the metal tabs of the PU on either side)? If anyone could tell me the distance between the screw holes on the black PU surround that would be so cool! These things don't come cheap, but would be so worth it if it fit. IMO, would be about the same overall price as a Hofner CT but better quality and sound
Hi, I have a 67 Hofner 500/1 bass with blades and recently rewound my neck pickup. I'm not sure the DC resistance. They are definitely single coils. The pickup has a SINGLE plastic bobbin with two ceramic bar magnets on the bottom on each side of the blade. I've owned Hofner basses with staple pickups and with blades and I found the blades had more output and I prefer the blades. I did find that I experienced 60 Cycle hum with the blade pickups before the rewind. I reverse wound the neck pickup and now they are dead quiet at full volume, same as a jazz bass cancels out when both are full. I believe re-issue Hofner blades pickups are now being produced , try North Coast Music. Regards Rob
Thanks Dadio, really useful. That may rule out the blades for me. Really want a humbucker and aren't really prepared to start rewiring PU's, its already a fairly budget bass.
