I love all the bells and whistles of the Mac OS, but Dashboard I just can't stand--I was very much looking forward to using it before I got OSX 10.4, but now I've got it (permanently!) off. I never could find even a halfway-decent use for it, and it just eats processor power and RAM...

I seem to be in the minority in disliking it, though :)

  8. I´ve got the usual suspects:

    -Calculator
-Universal converter (currency, temperature, length, weight etc.)
    -Local weather
    -iCal widget
-Daily comic strip from local newspaper

I just upgraded my machine, and am just getting used to using widgets. I'd have to say it's by far one of the coolest features of OS 10.4, i use it everyday. Here's what I have so far:

    • Calendar
    • Google Search Bar
    • Yellow Pages Search Bar
    • Fidelity Market Monitor
    • Calculator
    • AccuWeather Local Weather
    • AccuWeather Ski Report: Okemo Mountain...I'm ready for opening weekend!
    • National Geographic Daily Photo
    • Epicurious Recipe Widget
    • Family Guy Random Quote
    • iTunes Controller
    • Album Art Fetch
    • On Tour: This is sweet, list artists in you iTunes library that are on tour near you by location.
    • Movie Times
    • Movie Trailers
    • iStat Pro

I wish there was more food widgets...I love to eat and there's not too many in that category.

A TalkBass widget would be pretty rad too...Paul?;)

  10. I've got all the standards, plus:
    LivePhish
    istat pro
    cocktail (drink recipe book)
zzz most annoying groove (interesting widget--sounds like primus :))
    Gmail Checker

You've got at least one fellow in that.

I think that the Dashboard is kind of cool in theory but wastes way too much memory to be worth it. And that's not even considering that it's kind of a UI nightmare anyway.

I just got a new Macbook Pro. Two of the first ten things I typed into a terminal window:
defaults write com.apple.dashboard mcx-disabled -boolean YES
    killall Dock
