I'm selling the Aquila ShortBassOne-60 23.6" I bought direct from Aquila a few months ago. Here in the States it sells for $600-$700, I got a substantial discount buying it direct and because when it arrived, it was damaged, cracks in the tail, top and binding, which I had repaired by Eric's Guitar in Van Nuys, CA. It sounds fine, but the cracks are still visible. I'm selling it for $250 CONUS plus shipping, which could be over $75. If you're in the Los Angeles area, we could arrange to meet. It has a cedar top, shallow ABS body, active piezo under saddle pickup + passive piezo transducer, preamp and side sound hole. I replaced the Aquila Thunder Reds with LaBella/Gold Tone 25" flatwound steel strings and used a trapeze tailpiece to accommodate the longer scale strings. I also added chrome tuners and strap buttons. It includes a very nice padded gig bag. I think it sounds good and plays well, the intonation is a little sharp at the 12th fret.
am tempted...but those repairs scare me a bit!!!! looking for a compliment to my Fretless Ortega PM Shaman & Michael Kelly Sojourn 4K (both 25 scale) and My Fretless Magic Fluke Bass (21.5 scale). I might actually sell the Ortega or the Magic Fluke as I am still struggling with my intonation on the fretless....what do you know about the Kala Journeyman or the Ohana OB?
I knew the damage would be questioned, but I believe in full disclosure. It seems to play fine, and I always think about Willie Nelson's guitar. I recently bought a red Journeyman. It had a bad buzz on the A string, I brought it to Sam Ash since they're a Kala dealer. He compared one they had in stock and it did the same thing. He suggested I send it to Kala, which I did and they fixed it. Now it plays well.
Tried a Journeyman at Island Bazaar in Huntington Beach this morning...just a few minutes....seemed sturdy enough...but I ran into a buzz on the "E"!!! Was on sale for $257.99. My wife thought it looked like a mini jazz guitar in red!!!! Actually, went there looking for GoldTone/LaBella Silverbacks after following the short scale/guitar scale thread. They had GoldTone Micros...but no strings. Guy said they do sporadic shortscale/uke bass business at best. They are more known for ukes than basses and they have concerts there as well. Nice little store.
I've been there a couple of times, shopping and to participate in their play-alongs, great place but too much of a drive from me to go too often. The other bass player in my uke group goes often and was asked to accompany them to a uke festival in Hawaii in July, nice. If you'd like to try the Aquila bass and decide if you would want it, I could meet you half way between Long Beach and LA. I'll bring my Phil Jones Double Four amp.
I just was asked to do a gig in Long Beach June 27, 3 PM, at Able Arts, 3626 CA-1, Long Beach, CA 90804. I'll use the Aquila bass for the gig if you want to try it. I'm driving the group carpool and will be there early, if you want to arrange to meet there before it starts.
