I have the opportunity to buy this 64 P bass for 5 grand. I’ve always wanted a vintage P ever since I played one at a recording session. I’m not real familiar with price on these. Good deal? Bad? The owner is a friend of mine. He purchased it new in 64. Everything is all original
That's a very good price for that bass, especially considering your friend bought it new and the history is known. If you love it and have the jingle, take it home!
Maybe you could talk him down a bit since the G string is wound the wrong way on the tuner peg... Just kidding, cool bass.
I'm no expert, but 5 seems like a pretty solid deal on that bass (utterly ridiculous, but that's what they go for these days because 'vintage') based on what I've seen. Seems to be in extra-good shape, and I don't think I've seen terribly many white pre-CBS Fenders. If it does what it should and you can afford it and find it worth the investment for you, I say go for it.
When did Fender transition to that style of logo font on p basses? I thought 64's still had the "spaghetti" logo.
Lots of basses buzz / hum when the pickup pole pieces are touched. Clear lacquer is a lot less noticeable, but tape works... Very nice old bass. I’m way past buying a vintage bass, but I had my chances. One memorable chance was in about 1984. My wife worked with another woman whose husband played bass. She told my wife he had a bass for sale. I told her to find out more info. My wife came home the next day and said it was some kind of old Fender and he wanted $400. I was young and wanted a Spector, so I didn’t even go look at it. A few weeks later at a battle of the bands, the bassist in another band, who also worked in a music store I visited regularly, called me to the back of the stage to see his new bass. 1964 Jazz, the same one I didn’t even go look at. One of the many that got away. If you are looking for a vintage Fender bass, and you can afford it, your ship just arrived.
After you buy it....( And you should, if you have the available funds) First song you play on it........ SURFIN USA!!!!
I have a bass from this same year. It’s one of the basses that if I had to unload everything but one bass this bass would be a strong contender... I would grab this since it looks to be in excellent condition.
I concur with the consensus. If it's all original, it's a great deal. Tell him to knock off a grand if he doesn't have the ash trays.
That is a gorgeous specimen of a p bass. But I've given up on buying expensive p-bass guitars because I can get 99.9% of the sound from one that costs less than $500. I'm having a problem getting past the fact that the G is string is wound backwards.
Sometime during the early 80's there was a pre-CBS Jazz (forgot the year) for sale in the local paper for 800 bucks which I thought was kind of high, a guy I knew bought and it sounded great. I also lost a 65 P bass with an A neck on it at a guitar show, early 2000's, the guy wanted 800 bucks and I left to go see if I could get the money and it sold 15 minutes after i left.
