Are you a hoarder or a flipper? I'm at that fork in the road...

First a little background:
I've been playing bass guitar for about 12 years now. In the beginning my father bought me my first bass (5 string) and amp when I was in high school which I eventually got rid of for a 4 stringer, which ended up being my main learner bass and it served me well for a couple of years. Once it became apparent that I was hooked and truly dedicated to the instrument my parents and I invested together in my first "serious" bass when I was 16, a brand new (at the time) EBMM Sterling 4H which I'd had my heart set on for a long time. That bass carried me for loooooong time and I still have it. For about 8 years it was my only bass. Until the fateful day I decided I needed a new flavor and joined TB! :nailbiting:

So I've never considered myself rich or even prosperous, really. But I had my heart set on a modulus, I'd always wanted one. Ended up dropping a pretty penny on my first moddy, a vj4 with upgraded everything (right here on TB as a matter of fact).

Then I started reading up on things here, and one thing led to another and somehow over the past couple years I've saved up for and accumulated a total of 6 basses, all of which are pretty high end. So now I've reached my dilemma:

I have serious GAS for a custom shop or vintage precision bass as I don't have a p bass and feel I need one for practical purposes. But I'm starting to feel like I've invested more in basses than I really should. Do I sell a bass or two that I don't really use to fund it, or do I just save up and invest another couple of Grand for a precision?

One of the basses that I don't use much currently is a very rare bird that gives me much pride to own and I worry that I'd have sellers remorse almost instantly if I sold it...
But I'm really not rich enough to be a hoarder of expensive instruments that I don't really need. And before I discovered TB-induced GAS I never had a desire to own more than 1 or 2 nice basses.

What would YOU do to acquire the p bass? Are you a hoarder or a flipper?

Well, about 20 years into my journey I settled on EBMMSR5 forever (have 2 of those for anything that requires an electric bass, from soul to metal to fast HxC). Still I have a korean Fernandes Gravity V I love (but don't use much, just keep it just in case one day I need a P/J sounding bass) and an Epiphone Viola tuned DAEB for acoustic gigs (and sometimes HxC too, distorted). After playing for almost 30 years and owning a diversity of basses, both cheap and expensive I think your quest ends when you sound like yourself on any bass, then settle on the one that makes you shine the most, which is what happened to me. An expensive journey for sure :-( I vote don't keep any basses you don't play.

I have no interest in collections.

I'd say I was a lazy flipper. That means I sell my old basses but I take a long time to do it. I'm pretty slow at buying new basses as well. I've owned 10 basses in 50 years, and I only gigged 7 of those.

I currently have 2 basses that I'm not gigging and will probably never play live again but I just haven't got around to selling them. I'll think about it tomorrow.

Sounds very much like my experience, except I've been at it a lot longer than you. Your bass needs/wants will always evolve. So, you'll want to move the instruments that are not used, that have little to no sentimental value. If your goal is to build a stable of instruments that function as tools of your trade, it makes sense that you sell off those instruments that you don't need. Only you can decide which instruments hold enough sentimental value to keep, and you WILL have those in your stable as well. (keep those that have sentimental value)

BTW, I have 6 electrics (all different functions/gigs) and 2 uprights. (1 ply, 1 carved)

Just yesterday I sold a high end bass for a very nice profit ... and my first thought was what am i gonna get to replace it. After hours searching the inventory of multiple stores I came up with ... Nothing, really there is not another bass out there I want. Kinda scary, can't even find an amp or pedal either ...

I love the way we think like addicts. "Just sold a great bass...need a new fix!" :p

My problem is that I love getting deals. If I see a great deal, I feel the need to pick it up. I'm looking at a Stambaugh 5-string fretless that is beautiful at a nice price, but I already have a Pedulla Pentabuzz! It makes no sense for me to buy it, and I'm fighting off the urge, but it's hard. There's no reason to buy the same type of bass I already have! It would be another one of my actions brought to you by The Department of Redundancy Department.

But...I'm selling a Fender American Deluxe Jazz fretless and my first thought will be "what should I get next?" even though I have all of the basses that I need; my Warwick six-string, My Stingray 4, and My Pedulla Pentabuzz (and an old custom Ibanez I'm too lazy to sell and haven't played in years). Is there something I'm missing in my stable?

I would flip it. The more you own, the more it owns you.

Thanks Mr. Durden! :)

Seriously though, Ballin'bass, I used to think like that, but ultimately, I treat my herd like a golf bag...sure I have several, but they each do something specific and different. That said, there's no reason to own two 7-irons...sell the one you don't use.

Me too, Sput, and yes, I agree that it feels really weird.

I'm defiantly a hoarder ;) Oh I'll sell one once in a while to appear reasonable. When the missus asks why don't you sell some I tell her she can sell them all..........................when I'm gone.

If you already feel like you'll regret selling it, don't do it.

I've only sold one bass out of mine and I had no feeling of apprehension about it. Other musical stuff I've sold in the past I had that feeling of apprehension and, sure enough, the regret came afterwards.

Recently had thoughts of selling a Gibson SG I've owned for 20 years or so. Nope, not going to do it. I know I'd regret it even though I don't play it often.

That you say "Don't use much" is a sign that it may be worth dropping to find the P.

As for Hoarder or Flipper I think it's more about balance. Over the years I've probably become a mix of both. I've sold alot of basses, yet I've got 9 now that are unlikely to leave the fold anytime soon. That probably puts me a bit more toward hoarder, but I do play most of them from time to time. The goal should probably be to be content with what you have because even if you're a "flipper" over time you'll probably find that by occasionally deciding to hold onto an instrument rather than flipping it before you know it you'll have a room full of basses.

I'm a little bit of both :smug: If It says Jazz Bass or looks like a Jazz Bass, I always stop and ponder about it for about 3 minutes. I have about 3 basses too many and more amps than I will ever need. To my defense, all of my basses leave the house, even if just for a rehearsal. I have an Acoustic Electric Bass, that should be gone - I used to use it a lot when I was performing with an acoustic duo. Nowadays.... I haven't seriously used it for almost 2 years. As for my Flipper Side, there are a few basses that are always on the chopping block! They get played but they are always up for grabs if the right new thing, or the right trade comes along! Don't get me started on parts and knobs being around..... I am a parts whore and hoarder!

I'm a total hoarder. I'm playing for all of 2 1/2 years and have already either bought or built 22 basses. I'd like to sell some so that I can build some more, but I can't make myself part with any of them. I think I have a problem...

Mojomike for the win!!! LOL!!! I'd like to sell some so I can build more!
