"If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader." John Quincy Adams Sometimes I am a leader, other days I just don't have what it takes or I don't want to have it. I keep pressing towards this goal though even though I know I can't do it on my own. As a bassist it is my job to make the singer(s) and guitarist sound better and keep them on track. In life it is not always that simple
Nope. Never wanted it, never was particularly good at it and from what I've seen, more often than not, not worth the trouble. I'm really good in support roles, though.
Me too, lately though I have realized that I lead by supporting others. Like I do when I play bass. I never intend to be a leader and I think people like that make the best leaders. They may not have titles or appointments it is just something that organically happens. It is not always the people in the spotlight who make the most difference.
that's what happens to me. Luckily my drummer can handle the stuff as well (in band world anyway). He and I don't want to do it, but no one else is going to and someone has to. normally how it goes for me outside of band world as well.
I am Been the shot caller all my life. From captain of my little league and Pee Wee hockey teams to the military, my working carrier to owning my own business. The view from the front is always better then the view from behind.
I've never been much for leading or following. I much prefer the peace and solitude of doing what's best for me as long as it doesn't infringe upon or hinder others and anyone else is free to do the same as far as I'm concerned. Say no more!
Yep. Happened to me in Boy Scouts, competitive sports, high school marching band, group projects all throughout grade school and college, various jobs I've held, bands I've been in, friendship circles I've had... all of it. I almost never seek out the position; rather, it's just given to me in a de facto kind of way by my peers. I'm usually never the best or most qualified in any of these situations or circumstances, either. I wasn't the best soccer player, sax player, boy scout, student, worker, etc... however, I was almost always above average. I guess there's something else people tend to look for in a leader, though I'm not sure what it is or how it relates to myself and others who find themselves in these positions.
It may be the willingness to serve others. I'm sure a lot of us have heard the exprssion "servant leader."
+1 Its not about being "the best" its about having a vision and inspiring others to act towards accomplishing it. They do say that the best leaders lead by example.
"I think Smithers picked me because of my motivational skills. Everyone always says they have to work a lot harder when I'm around." -H. Simpson
I like to be a good supporter. However, many times I feel compelled to take charge and guide those around me into getting things taken care of. I feel like I may be a born leader, but too timid and accommodating to fully accept that role EDIT: My other self-analysis is that I am a born supporter, but spending almost my entire life as a big brother has made me feel at home in a teaching, guiding, and butt-whooping role
As Richard 'Demo Dick' Marcinko frequently opines, there is a two-word test for Leadership: "Follow Me!" If people do, you are. If they don't ...
