So I recently bought a Strat and started learning to play guitar for real (as opposed to just noodling) but have run into a major frustration. I’ve been playing guitar so much that I feel like I am forgetting how to play bass well. So my question for those who learned to play guitar after bass (or the other way around) is this normal? And does it get better or am I essentially going to have to relearn bass. I mainly want to play guitar as a secondary instrument to bass, especially when I am playing alone, but I want to maintain and improve my bass skills in the long run.

  2. To me, these are two completely different instruments but the lack of practice will show if you don't keep up with both. I've never had to re-learn anything, but merely polish up on certain skills that were lost due to the lack of time spent playing the given instrument.

Play the guitar in the morning and bass in the afternoon. Or whatever fits your schedule.

    My $0.02 only...

Same as suggested as @ajkula66, I don’t think neurons storing your bass-playing skills are being recycled to be used on other skills. What I believe is happening is that while different, these instruments are close enough to play some tricks on your brain. Where fretting a guitar takes almost no effort, the bass requires slightly more pressure. String spacing is different, tuning is different.

Playing both is, as suggested, the best way to let your brain learn to quickly adapt to switch.

I played guitar for 20+ years, one day I moved to bass and never came back. A few months ago picked up the guitar again after years not even touching it and took a couple of days to be as performing as when I left it. I also felt I was way superior musically after all the work put on the bass.

I think nothing is lost. Best,
