does anyone have any experience with this bass, or know of anyone famous who used them?

just got hold of this bass, neck through, well constructed and very heavy, one stock pickup at somewhere between P and J position, vol, tone and 6 way rotary dial and a mini switch that activates the dial. very easy to play.

    Yes, and Yes :D

I have one, an '85 model in black. I love it to bits, as you say they're pretty heavy but immensely playable. The close string spacing takes a bit of getting used to (16mm at the bridge IIRC). I know Aria have recently reissued them in Japan, including a John Taylor signature model.

Famous users: John Taylor (Duran Duran), Jack Bruce, Marcus Miller, Cliff Burton

Here are some webpages to visit with more info:

    excellent!

couldn't find much info on these basses on talkbass. glad someone has them.

I believe mine is the reissue as it has a blinking LED and recessed input jack.

do you know what frequencies the dial cuts?

There have been some discussions about there basses on here, but not too many.

The models from '81 on had the led and input jack.

    1981 catalog page here:

I don't know the frequencies the selector affects. I rarely use it out of the brightest setting, backing off some tone to calm it down.

I also get great results putting it through a Sansamp BDDI. With most other basses, the BDDI tube emulation muddies the sound. But the SB-1000 is so mid/top heavy in sound that it warms it up while keeping the cutting sound it specialises in.

    i agree!

    it sounds almost piano like!

For some reason, it sounds pretty bright even with the dial in off position.

Jmann, im not sure if they made lefty models. try clicking on the links in the earlier replies.

so anyone familiar with the going rate of a vintage sb1000 or reissue? from the website, it says 120,000yen.

how much did you buy yours for? I acquired mine, brand new and mint.

I have no idea about the new ones, they're not for sale in the US. Used ones come up on ebay from time to time, they generally go in the $400-$500 range. Mine was in mint condition, had basically been sitting in a case for 15 years, I paid $700. Which may be more than street value, but it was worth it to me.

I don't recall any lefties. Great bass though. My mom bought me one when I was almost 15 for X-mas. It was my first bass and still my only electric.

Your right about them being heavy. I've gone throughmany straps because of it's pec. I've worn out many straps like...I've lost count. But here's my ultimate fix until I get a larger pek.....duct tape. Fix it with duct tape.
