Up for sale is a 1983 Aria Pro II SB-Elite I, made in Japan at the Matsumoku factory.

As all good TBers already know (;)), acclaimed players such as John Taylor, Cliff Burton, Bruce Foxton, Jack Bruce, and many others played various incarnations of the SB series. This will deliver the Cliff Burton tone from the "Puppets" era as this is essentially the same bass as the Black 'n' Gold series but in white finish.

Speaking of the finish, it has aged from pearl white to a nice yellow cream, type of color. There is also some mysterious green streaking occurring in a couple different places on - or perhaps under - the finish. It is not something that can be removed with the usual methods (my tech tried different polishes and lighter fluid). Luckily it's not too noticeable since it's mainly just visible on the bottom and a little on the back. There are a few other dings, dents, and scratches, but not bad at all for this age of bass. The hardware is also in really good condition for its age. See photos, please.

The original pickup was completely dead and has been replaced with, in my opinion, the best possible replacement for SB basses. It's the MB-II model from Rautia Guitars in Finland. It sounds exactly as an SB series bass should and the series/parallel switch also works as designed.

The truss rod and neck are also in very good condition - everything working as it should. The frets look to be in excellent shape with very little signs of wear. It plays really well with nice medium low action. It was just professionally set up (as of 12/26/19) with 40-100 Rotosound Swing 66 steel strings. Aside from the pickup and back cover screws, everything is original. This is a really fine instrument that is stage ready.

I will include a Chromacast gig bag but if you would like a hardcase I can provide one at additional cost.

The price includes CONUS USPS shipping and includes insurance. If you're located outside of the US, PM me and we'll see what we can do for shipping.

Thanks for viewing. Note, I do have the bass on Reverb but, as always, it's cheaper here!

I owned one of these back in the 80's. A superb instrument in every regard!

I’ve got an oak finish SB1000 from 78, agreed, they’re fantastic basses!

How would you describe the string spacing on this bass? I've seen them described in their literature as some basses having "Wide", "Narrow", and "Very Narrow". Thanks.

I believe the string spacing is 18mm on these SB Elites, from what I have gleaned on the 'net. I put a ruler on the strings at around the pickup and that seemed to match up. According to one catalog (see link below) it calls the string spacing "wide" on the Elites. Also, the nut width is "narrow", at about 40mm and it's about 62mm at the 24th fret. SB-1000s on the other hand have "narrow" string spacing (16mm according to what I've found on the net and TB) and a "standard" nut width (around 45mm).

Just measured the string spacing on my SB1000 if that’s of any interest (centre E string to centre G string):
    Nut - 34 mm (45mm nut width)
    12th Fret - 39 mm (50mm neck width)
    Over pickup - 45 mm
    Bridge - 47 mm

    cheers.
