South Portland, ME – Arkham Sound is pleased to introduce the Bullet, a ruggedized, utilitarian, tube Bass Pre-amplifier housed in a surplus 30 Caliber Ammo Box. The Bullet is built to survive the rigors of the road while delivering a warm, vintage thump - as if Ampeg were given a Military contract to arm Motown!

    Features:
    • - 12AX7 preamp tube selected for good tone and low microphonics, and run at correct voltages (not a starved plate design)
    • - Mosfet buffered Lo-Z output, drives modern solid state power amps or recording interfaces with ease.
    • - Gain, Treble, Bass controls - uses a “James” tone-stack to give a wide adjustment range with minimal insertion loss.
    • - Hi switch – adds a "bright cap" to the circuit to open up the high frequencies a bit.
    • - Mid switch – provides a healthy bump around 250Hz
    • - Lo switch – another healthy bump, this time at 80Hz without boosting any subsonics
    • - DC referenced heaters, for ultra quiet operation
    • - Turret board construction, Mil-spec Teflon wire, etc.
    • - Carling switches, Switchcraft jacks, Belton sockets, etc.
    • - Integrated 9' power cable, stores inside the box.
    • - 30 Caliber ammo box measures 10" x 7" x 3.5"
    • - Removable door, seals tight with a rubber gasket
    • - Powder-coated steel chassis. Weighs 7 lb.
    • - Anodized aluminum faceplate, all stainless steel hardware.

$450 + shipping. Built to order, lead time approximately 4 weeks.

not really into the ammo can ( had my fill of military stuff when I was in the Army), but the electronics sound bad ass... can I get it in a regular box?

AC cord has to run out the front? Seems like a cheesy thing to put up with simply for the alleged coolness factor of using an ammo box.

I'm interested in it not being in the ammo box as well. Seems like that might be an issue when flying.

Militarizing musical equipment is silly. I feel the same way about manufacturers who use guns'n'ammo related names for their products.

Ok, here are a few answers.
The idea behind the ammo box is, once the lid is closed everything vulnerable is protected. Throw it in the van or your trunk without worry. It was inspired by the old military electronics gear I've serviced over the years, designs which often have clever enclosures.
That said, I can build this as a standalone 10" x 6" x 2" chassis, with an IEC socket in the rear.
This preamp has no input or output transformer. Lo-Z output is unbalanced.

    Thanks for your opinions, salcott.

Nice. However if I'm buying gear housed in an ammo can I don't want a can that originally held blanks.
I want a manly can that held belt fed .30 cal or sniper rounds.

I'm in Portland, I hope I see one being played by a local band at a show or something in the future.

And now I have a good buisness for amp tech work that I wasn't aware of before.

  15. I love that there are no other holes in the box, so it can all seal tight. Sometimes I have to set my gear down, and it's nice to know the box is all sealed tight.

I can't speak for this preamp but Micah at Arkham has worked on a few of my amps and always provides outstanding service. I have no doubt this is a great piece of gear.

Basic circuit is identical to the Zephyr, which is a 1U rackmount preamp with several additional features.
