I've have an old French bow stamped Arnold Voigt. It is a beautiful stick - it begins octagonal, becomes round, then becomes oval at the tip! I forget the length, but it is a short bow. It also has silver lining, ivory tip, etc. It needs major restoration though - the head had broken in half and was reglued shodilly, the stick has cracked and been reglued (looks fine) and the frog needs to be rebuilt. My question is - would it be a good investment to restore the bow and use it or sell it? Is Arnold Voigt well known? I even have half of the original old case - thanks guys....

A quick Google showed that your bow might be worth restoring- a collectors auction listed a AV cello bow in need of restoration that they expect to get between 80-120 bristish pounds & another british Bass shop lists an AV bass bow for 2,500 pounds (their calculator said that was something like $4,300). Your best bet would be to find a good luthier & take your bow to them- they'd be able to give you a better guess given the current condition of your bow.

A bow with a break anywhere in the stick is nearly impossible to sell. People use them if they have been repaired but I don't know of anyone that would actually buy a Bow with a repaired head or stick that had been split. Some classic Bows have replaced Frogs and retain as much as 50% of the value but a Broken stick has no Value in the market that I know of.

OK, so it seems that it wouldn't be worth the trouble to sell it. As far as playing it is concerned though, is the quality of the bow worth spending the money to repair it? Thanks again guys
