Arranging a lead sheet?

Discussion in 'General Instruction [BG]' started by bass87, Apr 8, 2003.

  1. Ok so I recently joined a small jazz group with some of my friends (piano, bass, drums, sax, trumpet). We've been playing together twice a week for about the past couple of months now, just playing tunes from Real Books, and it's been going really well.

BUT, in our naiviety, we have all decided over the next few weeks to try and compose a lead sheet individiually then come back and show it to the others. I have no experience with this and would be grateful if you guys could give me some pointers; for instance

    • Should I just compose a blank chord chart for everyone?
    • If so, how do I decide what type of chart to do, eg Rythmn changes, Modal etc?
    • Or instead, should I give some idea of the melody for the soloists to work around?
    • If so, should I compose a melody and put chords to it, or vice versa?

    Thanks for any help
