So on my quest for my first real amp I have come along many twists and turns, first i wanted an ampeg but they're HUGE and my car is small, so now it's been reccomnded I get an ashdown electric blue. While doing my shopping I ran into the MAG300, it's only 40 dollars more but it has almost twice the power, my question is how does the quality, durability, and more importantly TONE compare to the electric blue? Which one should i get? O help me TB amp guru's
FWIW, I had an Electric Blue 15 as my first amp. It was a good beginner's amp but I soon realized the tone wasn't for me. It was very midrangy and muddy sounding and couldn't really get that loud without sounding like it was straining. I decided to upgrade to a Markbass/Eden setup as I was going after a more pure, clean tone. I've never played the MAG but the extra $40 would probably be an upgrade from the Electric Blue.
i just sold my electric blue due to upgrading to a bigger rig but i found they had a great clean sound that didn't distort unless you cranked it all the way which most cabs should do anyway, i handled venues fairly decent size venues to tbh. The mag would probly be a better choice though just because it will probly have alot more headroom etc
According to Ashdown the front stage of an EB and a MAG are the same its only the overall power output stage that differs, so i think the reliability should be the same. If the EB is a 15" as well the tone should be similar too. I was very happy with my EB180 12" but if you can afford it i would go with the MAG, it's always nice to have a bit more power.
