Audition During Packing for a Move

Discussion in 'Bass Humor & Gig Stories [BG]' started by Chuck Chill-Out, Oct 11, 2017.

  1. I was asked to audition at my church next Monday to play bass with worship bands and our choir and orchestra. My family and I are also packing to move into a new house in a week and a half.

Haven't practiced in a few weeks since we've been busy putting things in boxes...

    Hoping all goes well.

You have over a week. Put in a few minutes a day. Even when work/life prevents me from doing much practicing, I try to at least run a few scales and a few songs every day. Makes a big difference. Good luck.

Did they give you a list to learn? Most P&W songs are pretty easy.

  4. Unless they’ve given you songs to prepare, there isn’t anything to practice. They will most likely pass out some music and ask you to play along. It could be simple chord charts, lead sheets, piano scores, or a written bass part, depending on the church and expected level of musicianship.

If you can read, you’ll be fine.
If it is just charts, stick to roots and lock with bass drum till you ascertain the style.

The most important musical traits for Praise and Worship rhythm players are reading, and knowledge of pop/rock styles.

Hope the audition and the move both go smoothly.
That's potentially a lot of stress in one week!

  7. No list or music. I've been practicing the music our choir gets. I sing 1st Tenor in the choir and worship teams. And no, I am not to the point of singing and playing...yet.

    By the way, DON'T BLINK!!!

  8. Thanks all. My 11 year old daughter sat in on my practice this evening.
"Dad, you are flat...that's better." She is an encourager.

She is also dishing back me "assisting" with her French Horn practicing.

That was neither humorous nor a gig story. ;)

  13. Well, two things from the audition:
    1. My home built fretless sounds great through the church sound system.
    2. I will be placed in rotation with the worship bands and the choir and orchestra.
So I guess you can say I have an actual steady gig.
Oh, and my family will be moving next Friday into a new home that has a woodshop so I will get back into building.
