    Height can vary a half inch during a normal day. People are taller after a night's sleep.

    Re: average height of polled bass players.

    What if you measure the horny ones?

  4. Just to add to the above post, I went and determined the Median and Mode based on the above chart.

    Median is at the 71" (5'-11") mark. Half of the heights are above and half are below.

    Mode is also 71" if you take the highest number that occurs most frequently (70" and 72" are both listed 96 times each). So 71" in right in between the two.

    BTW, I wish I knew Modes in Music as well as Modes in Statistics.....

    Right. I looked up average and the internet tells me there are three types - mean, median, and mode. I was only trying to clarify which type I was using. And yes, I think you are correct - the CDC's definition of the "average height of the American male" is likely not the median, though that's how I approached addressing the figure.

    As to what one might expect - maybe we have a hypothesis: Most bass players are taller than average. {shrug}

  6. Pedantically:

    Averages are 3 types, mean mode and median -- and usually when we say average we refer to mean and specifically arithmetic mean. There is also Harmonic mean and Geometric mean

    So if you have 5 samples of heights:

    150 cm, 160 cm, 170 cm, 180 cm, 180 cm

    Mode = 180 cm (because there are 2 180 cm)
    Median = 170 cm
    Arithmetic Mean is = 168

    (GEO MEAN is 167.587 and HARMONIC MEAN is 167.167)

    But why would that not seem suspect? Especially since the heights in the poll are self reported. I suppose that was my original point.

  8. In short not really that much, 71 is not that much from what the US census and other data sources report 70 inches or 5'10 is the average male height in the US. Also even with a small sample size (697 when I tinkered with this) the standard deviation is also 3 same as the US census. If our mean was 6'2 and our standard deviation was equal or lower than 3, then yes, we can proclaim that we are taller than the rest of the US population. If we used cm however, the data might be different - but we hate metric.

    So I got 71 as the mean even though more people responded (mode) 72 (6 ft) - So applying the standard deviation anyone from 5'8 to 6'2" is within the normal TB'er height. US Census Data is 5'7" to 6'1"

    I know statistics enough to pass the courses, but full disclosure my last job was AI related where statistics and linear algebra are used a lot

    Not everyone in your poll is male, which will skew the data if this is what you're looking for. You don't have average male bass player's height. You have average bass player's height, regardless of gender.

    Well, I should scrap it and start over to separate by gender? How much coffee did you drink today to come up with this? :woot:

    I'm only on my second cup!

    Maybe we need a poll on how much coffee the average bass player drinks?

    Took me a while, but I finally found a pic of an unpolled bass player. Helmet will have to do. I figured for sure some metal band would have a mask with horns that look like part of the head. But neither Slipknot or Gwar could help me out here.

    I'm thinking if we get some extra calories in you we could perhaps trigger a growth spurt. 5'11", let's do this!
