What gauge strings to you recommend for tuning B E A D? My 4th string sounds softer than the rest and I assume because the strings are to thin for this low tuning.

well your EAD strings should be the same as you would normally have them if strung EADG. I personally wouldn't go thinner than .125 on the B.

So do you think medium or heavy gauge from Elixer?

Depends on your technique. I use Elixirs on all my basses. The 5 and 6 string use the .135 B,and 105,85,60,40. Have to do mine as single strings to get that set.

Go with their 5 strings set and just toss the G string.

If I go with the 5 string set, do you think I have to get the intonation set? Don't want to stress the wood. I don't know crap about intonating a bass

i would use 120-130. if your b string ends up sounding thin compared to the rest, go thicker. if it sounds muddy compared to the rest, go thinner.

Yeah, but its easy enough to intonate yourself. You'll probably have to tighten up the truss rod a tad.

In the setup and repair section of the forums there is plenty of info on how to do a setup. Any time you change your tuning, brand of strings, or gauge of strings you should have a setup done. If you aren't ready to do a setup your self go to your local guitar shop and they should have a tech there that can do it for you. They will charge you though. Hope this helps.
