B15N New Speaker

Discussion in 'Amps and Cabs [BG]' started by bachlover, Jul 8, 2013.

  1. Hi folks, I just picked up an early 70s Ampeg B15N and need to replace the 8 ohm speaker. I'd like to put in something new rather than hunt around for a used speaker (did enough of that for the amp!). Any input would be appreciated - thanks!

You may be able to get the original driver re-coned. JimmyM used Eminence drivers recommended by Fliptops.

i've toyed with the idea of a JBL K140 for mine.

Maybe a Jensen 200 watt 15" would work. Very well I would think. It definitely would have the sound.

I've had a few speakers in my double baffle as honestly the one I liked the most is a reconed CTS, but the closest in sound IMO was an eminence beta 15. I don't have a 70s thiele cab, so I can't say for sure how the different speakers would sound in that cab.

Beta is good choive too, can take a little more oomph in the lows but at 25 watts, really a non-issue. Delta has little more topend.

I didn't like the delta for that reason. Found it too honky in most cases.

  8. Wow, thanks for the quick responses! I've ordered an Eminence Legend CB158 that will o through tomorrow. I can cancel this because I'm thinking maybe reconing's the way to go. With the price of the Eminence being so cheap, it might be easier and with as good (or close to it) end result to go ahead with the order. Any thoughts to the suitability of the Legend? I posted this thread to begin with because I'm thinking that a 300 watt rated speaker might be a tad overkilling for a 30 watt amp. Thanks again.

There's also a lot of soul in the Delta. :p

The CB158 will work fine in there. Little warmer, not as much topend as the Delta. Can take more pounding than that amp can ever give.

  11. Thanks guys, I'll go for the Eminence and see what I can do about repairing what's in there while I use the new replacement.

Actually, the Legend might work out well for that one. I had a 77 with the same style cab and it was loaded with a 71 CTS alnico, and that speaker was kind of dark in comparison to the 66 CTS that is in my 64 B-15N with the smaller double baffle cab. So maybe it'll match up.

Had to have been a replacement, bro. In 69, they used either CTS or Altec for stockers.
