I'm in the market to move up from my B-100R to a head and cabinet(s). I've narrowed it down to the Ampeg B2R or GK 700RB. I've chosen these based on price and power. Both affordable, and as much power as I think I'll need.

I'm also trying to decide if I want the combo version of these, or head and cabs. I don't know if I want to get the combo with a 15" speaker, or 2-10's ? If I get the 15, I can add a 4x10 later. The only reason that I may not get the combo is I'm planning ahead, thinking about my damn near 40 year old back. These are all questions I'm asking myself, but you can give opinions if you'd like.

I'd like to hear opinions about these two amps. I tried out the GK the other day, and liked it alot. I've also heard some bad things about GK quality And customer service.

    Any help will be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Dave

Dave, I am a long time GK user and I play a GK 700RB 210 combo at work(392 Army Band) and I just purchased a slightly used GK 1001RB 210 combo for my personal gigs. I play Modulus Basses at work and on private gigs. I used the GK 800RB for years before that. I have never had any problems with GK quality control but have heard a few rumblings lately too. I read two bad reviews on Harmony Central, but that was it. As far as the 700 RB goes, the one we have at work is a champ. It is a true professional sounding amp. I have used SWR Red Heads before using this combo and I would say that it is very similar in its functions and volume but it is a little bit moore powerful down low to my ears. If you are going for the head version I would guess that there would be some difference depending on what cab you use but the combo that I am using is a great amp.

I have played the ampeg B2 too, and I liked it as well. I am not sure, but as I recall the Ampeg B2R is only 200 watts, so as for a comparrison you will get alot more bang for your buck with the 700RB. I have seen a few GKs for sale here and on other boards lately. If in fact you do decide on the Ampeg, let me know. The shop I used to work in, in New York, has a few of the Ampeg heads and will probably sell em for a good price.

  3. The Ampeg b2r is 350watts @ 4ohms and 200watts
    @ 8 ohms. :)

I have the B2 Combo...had it for about a year and just added the SVT 410HE.....I thinks its a great combo..I only do wish that I had the head seperate so that I could take just the 4x10 to smaller gigs but all in all I think its a great expandable combo

I have a 1001RB, which is just the 700RB with a bigger power amp section, and I really like it.
