I moonlight sound at a local bar and the system is all custom built 5 way crossover with 8 18s 6 15s 1 10 and a 2 horns. I went in on monday to do sound for two metal bands turn the system on and things just didnt sound good so I call the owner and this system is his baby and ask to do some EQing he says go for it so I start dropping things a little here and there mostly 30-100hz and 1-20K mind you at this point all I am running is Music that a local radio DJ was playing as a promo for the show anyhow I start checking and do the kick first and all I heard was distortion... blown sub so I am thinking no big deal right one blown speaker. After the show I headed home not really thinking much of it, Tonight I went in and was helping the owner replace the sub and we started listening to things it turns out there were 5 blown JBL 2240s and two 15s and a downed amp all I can say is 1400 in recones and he was not happy nor was I.... why couldnt this happen to someone else, why me on sound when the **** hit the fan. I didnt blow anything
Setup the power amps with a tone genrator for the absolute maximum with the absolute maximum from the board and EQ the same way. Basically use a refernce you know is abusive and then lock the amp cabinets and cross over. This way in the future noone can smke the equipment.
I have been doing live sound for about 10 years and sometimes things go wrong speakers blow in light of the situation I think he was luck to have not had anything blow before now. Those subs had done a good 1500 shows so I am not to blame but it still sucks that I was there when things went south
