I bought a Mesa Boogie Nomad 100 amp today at GC for $350. The reason it was so cheap was because they said they thought it had a bad tranny and that there was no output somtimes (the salesman said he thought someone left it on all night with no cab plugged in). I tried it and it worked like a champ and so I figured if there is a problem, I could have it fixed and still be ahead financially. So, if the tranny is bad, what are some signs/symptoms? If it is indeed bad, how much could one expect to pay for a fix/replacement? Thanks for any help!

  2. You'd know it in a heartbeat. The amp wouldn't work at all, it might catch fire, and it defintely whould blow its fuses (assuming they are the proper rating). If someone left the amp running all night not hooked to a cab, it would be fine as long as it wasn't being played. Intermittant output is probably caused by a bad connection somewhere inside it.

I used to work with those fine amp "experts" at Guitar Center. I vividly remember having to fix a customer's old Fender that he had brought in for tubes (didn't need 'em, BTW) and of the doofi had just grabbed a bunch of EL34's and plugged them in every socket, rectifier and output, (he'd probably have crammed them into the preamp sockets if he oculd have got them to fit) because he "knew what he was doing" and I was busy elsewhere. I told them the next time they did something like that, they got to fix it themselves and were responsible for the cost of the parts and any resulting damage. Fortunately an EL34 makes for a LOUSY rectifier and aside from cooking the tube, the amp was otherwise fine.

You most likely got yourself a good deal. Even if the Nomad's output tranny goes bad (and I doubt that's the problem), there are SEVERAL cheap, high quality replacement models that will work in its place. Also,if you run a tube amp without a load the tubes will coook LONG before the transformer.

Thanks for the fast reply! Well, the amp so far has performed flawlessly, so I dunno if there really is an issue or not. Maybe they had a bad cable? Maybe a bad power socket in the wall. Who knows? I think I'll have my tech look it over just for peace of mind. They did put brand new tubes in it just to make sure it wasnt't the tubes...but the tubes say Mesa, which makes me suspicious that they really didn't do anything. Does GC even stock Mesa tubes? Also, the guy at the counter said..."Oh, BAD TRANNY! That's gonna cost like $400-500 to replace." WHICH I SERIOUSLY DOUBTED. So I scooped it up. Thanks again!

Well, I spoke with my tech and he said that unless the amp is actually acting up, that I shouldn't even bring it in. His estimate for a fix (the tranny) was about $200-300, but he's not Mesa authorized, so he wasn't completely sure. He did suggest "knocking it around" just a bit to see if that triggered any issues. I'm starting to think what Nightbass thinks...I stole this baby! Now, to see which I prefer:

My Trace Elliot Speed Twin H100 or the Mesa Nomad 100...choices, choices:D

I love the GC Memorial Day Sale...

  5. PBG is right, the transformer either works or it doesn't. If it works now there's nothing wrong with the transformer.

There may be an intermittent connection causing a problem, but tain't the tranny.

I am ashamed. I am mortified! There are bass players on this site that may be only 30 or 40 years old and you have the audacity to turn this into a porn site. Trannys indeed! Our Values are under assault, no one is safe talking of trannies. Well!! I've only visited those sites say 476 times and for educational purposes. I was doing research in case.. well never mind..... So go off and play you strings you, you sinner! Whether they be 4 or 5 or 7 string or even a G string thong from Victoria's. You'd better watch it, you know who is watching. Yes, no not him! St.Ashcroft you idiot or St. Bennett.
