Hey guys, quick question for everyone before we head off for the weekend gigs! As I've started to play out more often, I've met a few contacts through other bands locally. My question is, do any of you here often have relationships with other bands to recommend them for gigs that you aren't able to commit to, and hope that they do the same for your band? Or is it a zero sum game? I don't think I'd have a problem helping another band out if a place calls me and my band can't make it as long as I feel comfortable the other bands would do the same for me. But not everyone in my band seems to have this opinion...any one else find positives/negatives about doing this?
I guess it depends on your local scene. In my scene we all support each other. So, yes if I get a call for a gig and we are booked then I will refer a band that I respect to the club. I know that some scenes are more cut throat and its all about rivalry and competition. I really disagree with this attitude. If you look at the city's such as Seattle, LA (sunset strip), NY Punk scene, Nashville country scene, etc.....and you talk to the up and coming bands/artists/musicians there is a mutual support and friendship that they have. That's the way it should be.
Here in my area - we have both. I honestly believe that you better yourself and your name when you work to help others and develop alliances. Some people just do not reciprocate, or the opportunity does not present itself. Being supportive, and positive is the high road. If your not on it......your somewhere else.
Here at least, we all try to help each other out. There is an unwritten code not to slam other bands publicly and we all try to get and support each other at shows.
Not into any gig situations now, but in regards to life in general, what goes around comes around, so being helpful to others without expecting anything in return, (especially if it is at little, or no cost to you), can usually only brig good karma. Many times there will be no obvious payoff, but there may be good things that happen in your life as a result of how you act that you are not even aware of. On the other hand, you may never benefit from any kind deeds, but that does not diminish the effect you may have on others.
Thanks guys! Floyd keep me up on your guys schedule I'll have to come watch...love me some good 90's covers
Small break at the moment, but we are at a place in Cedar Hill called Chris' Big River Bistro on Aug. 17th.
Floyd, have you played out at Chris' before? We are back there the week before you, 8/10. We played there a couple months ago for the first time. Staff and people treated us great. I'll be interested to hear how your guys set list goes over with their regulars. P.S. We don't know each other, but we are from the same part of the STL area. I met your guitarist one night when we were playing Jamm Inn late last year. I recognized him from pictures you posted on here. He was drunk and having fun playing pool. His expression when I brought up your band (he hadn't mentioned being in a band) was pretty funny.
Pool? Jason? Nah. What band are you from? Jamm In used to be one of our regular haunts. Of course Jason lives very nearby and so he is always in there shooting pool, but we very rarely play there anymore. We did play Bikefest out back a few weeks ago. As far as Chris' goes, this will be our first gig there. To tell you the truth I am not real worried about our set going over ( I mean we usually do pretty well at Jamm In), I am more worried about us being able to keep the volume level down. We will be running a bare bones PA set up with only vocals and maybe a touch of kick in the PA. Due to space limitations I may ask Dave to leave one of his kick drums in the trailer. We're a 3 piece but we actually have a fairly large footprint on stage. Locally at least, we typically bring a decent crowd with us regardless of the venue's regulars. I imagine the little place will be pretty full.
I play with Whiskeyfinger http://www.whiskeyfinger.com. We haven't been playing much more than monthly for the last year or so. I said that about the set list because we play a wide variety of rock/pop. We intentionally played a lot of classic rock out there and kept getting requests for country tunes. I was driving through House Springs to my guitarist's house on MM to pick up gear when you were playing Bikefest a few weeks ago. I felt for you guys, those clouds were rolling in fast.
Yeah, that turned into a total goat ****. As an aside, never, EVER let the dude from "Homegrown" run sound for you. I'm pretty sure he intentionally screwed us over at Bikefest. Plus his gear is crap. I had our SE there who attempted to help the dude, but he wouldn't listen. I have a video if I can dig it up, where you can clearly NOT hear any bass. In fact all you CAN hear is vocals. Dude is a douche. Anyway, yeah, we pretty consistently deal with calls for classic rock numbers playing out here in Jerf Cod (Jeff Co). Pacific is even worse. I tell them all the same thing. " If you want classic rock you need to go to a Bad Penny (Copperhead) show or go see Tres Hombres. We do strictly hard rock and alternative. We could make a lot of money playing that old ****, but **** that. We ain't in it for the money. Very few bands around here pull off the stuff we pull off, let alone any 3 pieces. I don't do requests and I don't compromise when it comes to material we perform, period. That's just me though. I have heard of you guys, but I haven't had the pleasure of seeing you yet. I'll see about showing up at Chris' on the 10th.
There isn't anybody playing the set list you guys are in the area, I like it. Our song list is all over the place anyway so we try to tailor our sets to the places we are playing a little bit. I'll try to make it to one of you shows as well. All the guys I gig with live out your way, but I am down in south city so not always out that way. We are playing on the patio at that Mexican joint in House Springs on 7/27 as well. Now that will be a quiet one.
btw, I live about 5 miles past Chris' in Morse Mill. Drummer lives out near Lonedell. Jason lives right off MM over by the elementary school.
p-lo I've heard of you guys but also not had the pleasure of seeing live, you mostly do jeff co./ south county area??...Seems like you guys do somewhat similar playlist to us...though we also do more pop stuff lately to get people dancing...Also the fact you do the humpty dance makes you guys AWESOME
Floyd you guys have a good thing goin with 90's alternative...I have a 2nd band that does 90's hard rock but will never go anywhere cause it's basically a favor to a friend that got bored playing by himself
Not sure if just anyone can watch this video, but if you can you will see what I was talking about with the sound guy. That's where he set up to the right side of the stage ( left if you're facing it) and you can see our SE in the white shirt trying to help the bastard. Unfortunately it was also a little obvious that I wasn't very happy. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=608297659193973&set=vb.100000412331488&type=2&theater
