Band with best overall tone?

Discussion in 'Miscellaneous [BG]' started by Nomadic Herder, Jan 13, 2002.

  1. I was wondering what you all think is the band with the best overall tone? My choice is definitely the Dropkick Murphys. The guitars have a definite crunch, the bass is a dirty P-bass, the drums are really cool and their singers fit well.
  2. Definately Powderfinger on their latest album, Odyssey Number 5. It's real nice mix, and the Bass has a really nice warm town, Rickenbacker power :) although i think he play's a fender P Bass now.

Do you guys know of this band Internationally, they are an Aussie Gem :)

Im gonna go with Radiohead, amazing guitar tone, and very good other instrument tones.

Radiohead does have great tone. but my votes for tool. i mean, the guitars ambiance is awesome, the basses sweetness, and dirtyness at the same time is just wonderful, and danny carry has GOT to have the best drum set in the world.

I'd agree with both Tool and Radiohead. I have also found that Shellac has a good sound (due to Steve Albini) - especially on "at action park" and "1000 hurts". You can hear every instrument very well, and the vocals as good as you need to here them.

    Iron Maiden
    Guns N Roses

    Lambretta ( kick ass !! :D )
    Manic street preachers

Steely Dan always has the cleanest
recordings where you can hear every track so celarly.

I don't know what happened to them, but the drum tracks were sweet. And I'm not particularly a hardrcore guy.

Saves The Day's CD Through Being Cool has an superb mix. The guitar and bass tones are excellent, and the vocals aren't too quiet (as with most indie punk/emo records)

    And what great songs too!

i can't really pick a BEST, but heres a few gooduns.

    Iron Maiden
  13. Incubus. Im sorry to go on about them and they appear to be the only band i mention, but live. WOW!

  14. I'd never be able to pick just one band....but if I had to, I'd say Pantera (Very heavy, but still incredible). As for individual:

    Bass:(clean)Dude from Tool
    Steve Harris
    Cliff Burton

    Guitar: (Distorted) David Gilmour
    Jon Schaffer (Iced Earth)
    Jimmy Page

    Drums:Vinnie Paul (Pantera)
  15. that sad face in my previous post was a typo (*spills beer bottle*) "Ah, damn it"
  16. I'd have to say, in no particular order:

    Green Day
    Metallica (Old school and New)
    Sly and the Family Stone
    Black Sabbath
    Dream Theatre
    Rob Zombie
    Satch (coughSTU HAMMcough)
    Iron Maiden
    Reel Big Fish

    That should be good...
  17. Smashing Pumpkins - Gish had a bad bass tone, they over did the layering with Siamese Dream, but Mellon Collie & Machina have great tones, and D'arcy gets a great tone for playing with a pick.

Radiohead - Colin Greenwood's tone is what made me stop laughing at P basses.

I'm not by any means a fan of U2, but they have some fabulous tones.

I would agree with Tool, but Justin Chancellor has a horrible bass tone. It was cool in Aenima, but it was annoying in Lateralus... much like Danny Carey's drumming.
