Went to a Halloween show at a local bar.

First 3 bands were great - loud but not too loud.
Then ACDC tribute band comes in. Gets stupid loud. To the point of hurting your eardrums. I'm sure the band members themselves were long deaf and couldn't tell.

Why on earth would a band want to play so loud in a small bar? This was really stupid and to me made otherwise good musicians looks like complete amateurs - once it hit a certain volume everything just became a wall of noise.

Ending up leaving early to avoid ear damage.

I don't understand it either. Just silly and unnecessary.

Seen (heard?) it FAR too many times - which screws up an otherwise decent band!

Guitarists want the image of a Marshall stack when a Fender Deluxe would do the job.

Even the big names do it. I saw Alice Cooper 10 or 15 years ago. It was a 1700 seat theatre. Stupid loud. My wife and I had ringing ears for hours afterwards. I couldn't even make out the songs at first.

Loud is good, but louder doesn't always mean gooder.

    I have a deluxe reverb.

Even it can get stupid loud. Use with discretion.

It's so common I bring plugs to local shows
  13. I would complain to the management and tell them why I am leaving. Course, I wouldn’t have gone in the first place....

I've also started carrying ear plugs. Some local bars even blast their karaoke too loud.

I used to play at a spot where the DJ played louder than us.
  17. I think the idea is that when the headliner takes the stage, they crank them up a bit more because maybe they think that they deserve everyone's attention and they figure that the louder they are the more you will watch...
Just like morons that yell and think that when they yell even louder that you're gonna' LISTEN !
Goes with the demographic and alcohol.

I was playing a show this weekend at a small bar, we had a reasonable sound level for the fist set and everything sounded great....a quick 15 minute break we come back, same levels into a couple of softer songs and all I could hear was the loud conversation of everyone in the audience. At that time the sound guy asked if we wanted to turn up, I asked for a small increase across the board and I think he misunderstood the "small increase" and just slid the sliders up and walked away......I heard about the volume issue from quite a few people once we were done.

I have posted this many times but it's worth posting again. I have always believed that a great band that is too loud will drive people out of a venue faster than a mediocre band that plays at an acceptable volume.
  20. My favorite is "guys with an acoustic guitar" playing in a restaurant lounge that have enough volume for an outdoor gig....
